What is your definition of SCARY SHARP?

What is everyone's personal opinion on "SCARY SHARP" ? Slicing paper cleanly? Able to cut hemp rope? Filet paper? What? Any and all comments would be appreciated!

Children cry when you unsheath your knife. Women swoon. Major motion picture companies send offers for horror-movie roles, and the U.N. Security Council issues sanctions against you and your family.

Sharp enough to scare the hair off a gnat's ass! :D

In all seriousness, I think a knife is plenty sharp when you can no longer actually see light reflecting off the edge.

so far the shapest knife is my siegel camp , he knows sharp and stays sharpIMG_0254.JPG

Thats usually what I work my edge too, but man when you split hairs twice...its just freakin awesome:D

When your knife cuts you and you don't realise it for a few minutes (oh crap I am blending... when did do that?)

I'd say "scary sharp" simply means you are scared that you could cut yourself if you aren't perfectly careful with the knife. Another way to put it, the knife is so sharp there is no room for careless handling.

Somebody on this forum once said that scary sharp is when the hair jumps off your arm out of fear before the blade even touches it.

SCARY SHARP is a Tai Goo edge. He can actually pull a hair off his head and split it into enough pieces to tie the ends together and make a belt.

OK it's not a really strong belt, but come on!

Wow, I've never had a knife sharp enough to cut hair above the skin...

Either that, or my hair is particularly soft and delicate.

...

Why, yes, I do condition the hair on my arms and legs, why do you ask?

Too funny, especially the last part :)

To the point of the original post, any knife that can actually do some of the things mentioned in this thread (cutting the tops off arm hair, splitting hair, push cutting a single ply of toilet paper) would definitely indicate a scary sharp edge. I'd put most of my knives in the "wicked sharp" category; push cutting through notebook paper is no problem and if care is not taken they'll all cut you plenty bad. The two knives I own that come closest to scary sharp would be a Delica and an M2 Ritter.

Sharp enough that I can take it to the lavatory and comfortably shave with it. IOW, as sharp as a well maintained straight razor.

to throw another question into this thread. What is the sharpest production knife you guys have received (straight out of the box, no touch ups)?

I have read good things about spyderco and recently purchased a PE delica wave, I'm hoping it comes pretty sharp as I have no way to sharpen my knives yet (and am scared I would mess it up if I tried). I have a few nice knives but surprisingly my byrd meadowlark was the sharpest. It shaves my arm with little to no effort.

well I like to keep a few of my knives scary sharp, but for the most part my user knives are just sharp enough to perform well but hold their edge too...When you sharpen a knife too much it will not do as well when cutting tough materials like meat, or cloth...I don't mean dull by any means, but just a tiny bit of bite on the edge...some micro teeth for the heavy cutting jobs you know...

I can't wait until I get an edgepro apex...Still saving up...sigh...
