I have very much enjoyed my 25 year career as an artist and dealer in fossils and ivory but a few years ago I stumbled on what I think would be the ultimate gig. Through one of my customers I was hired by a leading documentary producer in Great Britain to find ancient frozen meat for a film on cloning. I went on two trips to remote parts of the state and had a blast. I did not find the frozen mammoth but I did find a 500 year old piece of walrus meat and hide dug up in a Eskimo village . Monday a crew stopped by and filmed me carving a mammoth tooth .They are working on a series of documentaries on Alaska for a major cable channel. I am talking with them about ideas for their project and it looks may get a few trips out of the deal.
If I had the financial resources to take the time to change careers I could see myself making a living recording Alaska and its people on film. It is a tough business and I am happy with what Iam doing now. It seems I am always looking for something different but end up staying with what I know.
