Thanks for all the interest in this. I should get the quote for the parts by this friday and I can figure the price and get back to you all. Thanks again everyone.

Adam,

How is this mounted? Just thought of asking since my KMG
is on one of Rob's very solid steel baseplates...

I sent you an email last friday, but I'll post it in here too, since you're keeping track here. I'll take one too! :)

adammichael, you might consider chamfering the bottom edge of your platen so that you can get up close to the wheel when grinding on an angle. Nice job by the way.

I am also interested. Let me know if you are going to sell them.:D

Im hoping to get the parts quote tomorow and I will post what the selling price will be.

Thanks again for all the interest.

Let's hope it'll be still withing reach of a knifemaker. :)

BTW When I was working in new product development I was getting quotes from at least five suppliers/manufacturers.
Also ... common practice, when talking to a potential supplier, is to make your order look like it's just a beginning of something bigger that it is in reality. It makes manufacturer more cooperative(and may be you get better price) since there is a hope to make big bucks in future.

I deal with vendors all the time in my real job (mechanical engineer) and I have worked with these guys on alot of projects. I have other quotes coming in and I will pick the best one and then beat them down on the price untill they are barely making a profit.;)

Just curious, what do you consider "still withing reach of a knifemaker"?

Pricing anything is one of the toughest parts when manufacturing anything.

Thanks for your input.

Michael

In my case it's any amount that doesn't make my wife say "How much?!!! For THIS?!!!" :)

Unfortunately an average full time knife maker is not making too much money
and there are not too many doctors or lawyers who make knives as a hobby.

First, just want to make sure that if you're maintaining a list, my name is on it. :)

Second, regarding pricing, that is indeed a difficult question. If you charged $100 you'd never be able to make enough to satisfy demand. If you charged $1000 people would just try to make them on their own. My advice would be to work with Rob Frink on this. He has established an outstanding reputation with his customers, and those are the very people who would be buying this attachment. Rob makes and sells a lot of different accessories for the KMG1 and would no doubt have some extremely well founded thoughts on the matter. Perhaps I'm talking out of turn here, but if you and Rob could work together on this project, with Rob perhaps distributing some of these for you, I think you'd both benefit.

Having no idea whatsoever what this might cost to build, I would think that the sweet spot would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $300. I might be way off, but that's about where I would bid this if I saw it offered on eBay. ;)

Im still working on this. I havent got the quote back yet but I will try to get an accurate price for a complete arm in the next couple of days.
Thanks for being patient.
