What is your experience with Fehrman knives, such as the COLD FURY???

5-10 years for a steel I would still call petty new?

The lifetime of current cutlery dominance is way shorter than that, probably pushed by the fact that you can sell "new" really easily. But yes in terms of steels, it is very new compared to M2, D2, etc. .

Danbo, what was the soak temperature, your final hardness was *way* above spec especially considering it was air cooled. Even if you soaked at 2050 which cuts the impact toughness in half, you only get 59/60 with a 950 temper, lower soaks reduce this fast without cryo and faster quenches.

When a knife hits the concrete floor, it takes the impact over a very wide area, this reduces the pressure accordingly and it is pressure which is critical the edge angle is also relevant of course. As for twisting, this depends on the edge thickness, how thick was the edge behind the bevel?

I think the Peacemaker is as close to perfect ergonomics as you can get for a small fixed blade. It is really well done.

Yes, I totally agree. I wanted a first rate utility knife, and narrowed my choices to Busse, Fehrman, and Dozier. The Fehrman stood out with an excellent handle and adequate guard. Sufficiently long guards are important to me, and the Fehrman beat the Busses and Doziers hands down in this respect.

I agree W.T. about the guards... very important factor in my opinion.

Good opinions guys, keep'em coming,

HoB, I didn't mean to single you out with the "S3V" comment. It still gets tossed around as a misnomer for S30V. No hard feelings I hope :)

Danbo, I remember that story! :D IIRC Paul Bos soaks 3V at 1975º F, does a snap temper to about 500º F, cryos in liquid Ni overnight, and does two 2hr tempers at 950º F for about 61 HRC. I don't doubt your results; what I don't understand is how some makers gave it a bad rap. Probably because of lousy HT and/or poor testing criteria.

Wanna hear a sad story? That blade is still hanging on a hook out in the shop. It's smaller and slimmer(due to various mistakes in grinding), but will still be a pretty good large hunter/small camp knife, if I ever get around to finishing it. ;) :)

Not at all. Thanks for pointing that out, I probably would have just gone on an repeated the same mistake  .

Let's light a fire and sing some songs guys. This bonding is making me want to shed a tear, lol... hehe, just kidding.

Thanks again for all the input,
Cleary
