As far as Bucks go, it would be a Squire that I bought in 1977 or so. A truly superb little knife!

Unfortunately, I don't own any Buck knives yet, but I've been planning to change that. I think my first Buck is going to be the 110, since it's a classic. I feel like I've missed something for not owning one.

Jani,
Go for the gold and get one of those Buck 110 Master folders before they all disappear (they're discontinued). I love this knife. BG-42 steel, dyamond pakka wood scales, nickel silver bolsters....WOW!

Thanks for the advice, Greg. I really have to think about this. Is the Steel on the Master Series a little or a lot better than the steel used in the basic 110's?

Jani

Jani,

Greg is out of town and away from his computer so let me answer your query. BG-42 steel as used on the Master Series is a premium steel that many of us consider a quantum leap over the standard production steels major manufacturers use. Note that BG-42 is featured in Chris Reeve's outstanding Sebenza folder too and that retails for $350!!!

Unquestionably BG-42 tremendously enhances the functionality of the models Buck chose for its Master Series. Greg's recommendation is a very sound one worthy of your consideration. The knives are well worth the money and as they are being discontinued will appreciate in value.

I did NOT escape from the institution! They gave me a day pass!

Thanks, Bob! A quantum-leap, you say? Sounds pretty good to me.

If the basic-110's aren't discontinued, I could get one of those later if I felt like it, but now I think I might just go for the MS110, as soon as I feel like I can afford it.

Jani

Bob,
Thanks for posting about the BG-42, I appreciate you letting Jani know I was out of town and not just being rude

Jani,
I wouldn't wait too long. I have a feeling that the 110MS is going to get harder to get. I would try Howard at the Knife Center first or Chris/Marti at TOT Knives to see if any are left.

Let us know if you can find one if you choose to get one.
Regards,

The 110 has to be my favorite by far. Had one for years. also had a fixed blade when i was a kid. cleaned lots of fish and cut lots of marshmallow roasting sticks with it. Currenlty working on a repair of an old 110 someone gave to me. All beat up, someone took a grinder to the blade(Jeff is sending me a new blade, Thanks again) brass all dented and scratched, wood cracked... I'll post a pic when finished if I can figure out how.

My favourite is the 110. Have a standard model of 1992 wich is in my EDC rotation. Ordered a custom 110 with nickle silver bolters and buffalo scales, so I think this will be my favourite Buck when it arrives. I also like the 704 Maverick as a pocket knife.

I would have to say the 110 is my favorite. With the 112 close behind. I also like all of the traditional black phenolic handled fixed blades. I can't pick a favorite on those I like them all. Great designs for the hunter. It's a shame some models are discontinued.I especially like the two knife sets housed in one sheath.I have two of them. The Vanguard is another excellent design. The handle feels great in the hand. If anybody is interested in customizing a current standard version of your 110 or 112 or even a fixed blade, check out the work of Tom Stratton at www.fancyworkpocketknives.com He does excellent filework and re-handle jobs on production knives.

Wow, talk about dragging a thread back from the grave.. This is from 5 years ago!!

Well, I'm proud to be the only one to say: The 303 Cadet

My hands-down favorite is the 112. I have been using one for 20 years now, and although I have tried many other folders, I keep coming back to this one. Now, I am patiently waiting to slap oak scales and a BG-42 blade on the Ranger for my ultimate EDC. :D

Interesting how this old thread comes back and sounds fresh, also the same favorites still pop up.

For me, It´s hard to choose a favorite Buck, probably the 112 for folders and the 105 for fixed blades.

this is still a cool thread! It would be hard for me to choose between the 110 and the 501. I own 2 501's , An older 70's model with the maroon micarta handles, And a newer wood handled model. In the 70's it was called the "Esquire", But it changed to just "Squire" when the micarta handle was changed to wood. I beleive this is what Joe told me when I sent my old Esquire in to be re-bladed a couple of years ago. I love those old micarta handles,They just get better with age! The Esquire was my first Buck knife in 1976. I soon followed with a 110.

My new 503 SP4 Custom Stag Prince just took over top place from the Buck 172 Mayo TNT.
favorite lockback: Buck 110 Folding Hunter
favorite slipjoint: Buck 303 Cadet
favorite fixed blade: Buck 192 Vanguard ( esp. Limited Edition Deer Profile (stag) )

The file work on the blade spine and handle set this limited edition knife apart from all others. Thanks, Wilde Bill !
