what is your favorite bush craft knife

For me it is more of a backpacking "survival" tool. I love the knife because its not to heavy it has a good thick spine the micarta handles have awesome traction even when wet and i have had a lot of success using it for anything from building shelters to splitting wood.

Thanks! (Though saying it's "survival" doesn't explain much....that one means even less than "bushcraft"! :D)

So it sounds like you are talking about a smallish chopper, rather than something for doing detail work on wood?

Great pic. Gotta love a Ruger and a well used knife.

Terry Kidd custom skookum "copy" I don't think you'll fin a better design I see blade scout above agrees:D

Well spotted and you are quite right; when listing the specs and making a sketch of the knife, that I wanted, I was amongst others heavily influenced by the excellent SKOOKUM, from which I picked some of the the details I wanted in a knife.

As far as production blades go, I've really taken a shine to the Mora Companion in stainless steel. It's like a robust paring knife that I can use and abuse without feeling bad about it.

As far as what bushcraft/hiking knife I will take to my grave, Fiddleback Woodsman. Hands down. Andy picked out the wood for me himself, and he's a friend. You could plunk me down just about anywhere on the planet, and I would feel very well prepared with my Woodsman. Pair it with one of Wildmanh's beautiful leather sheaths, and you've got a set up that'll last:thumbup:

Fallkniven F1, Bark River Aurora, Bark River Bravo 1, Survive Knives EDC-4

Adventure Sworn Classic, Enzo Trapper and a Dogwood Hiker are my go to bush-crafter type blades. Although, several Helle and Mora knives are also favorites.

I have a Dogwood Trail Hiker as well and love that thing. Have much more expensive customs but the Trail Hiker is a cutter. It helps that mine is 3/32. ;)

Spyderco Bushcrafter O1

Koster Bushmaster 3V

Marbles Ideal 52100

BHK Bushcraft Scandi O-1 ( best production Heat treat in O-1 I've found. It's triple tempered, cryo, rc 60 ) It takes some nice edges.

Several Bark Rivers such as Aurora 3V,

I couldn't choose between the Spyderco ( ergos by far the best), Koster Bushmaster 3V (All around stout, high performing knife), and the BHK with it's decent ergo, outstanding O-1 and fit and finish.

Next up would probably be the Ideal in 52100 ( the steel W/convex grind is dangerously sharp and has drawn my blood twice. Once through a cleaning cloth without slicing the cleaning cloth open. ? ) Built by M. Stewart

Notable* but I chose a 6 inch blade instead of 4-5 inch is the GS Survive in 3V. Very well made, very sharp 3V. Still hasn't seen hard use though so I'm not recommending it yet ONLY for that reason. I suspect it would be fine.

dayhiker- did you convex that edge more- i.e.- getting rid of the micro bevel? It kind of looks like it from that pic. If so, how did you do it- sandpaper and mousepad?

Yes. Over about 4 years worth of use and sharpening freehand on a stone ,plus mousepad and sandpaper.

thanx,

Mine is probably my Bark River Colonial Patch Knife. It has about a 3" blade of 52100 and a great convex. I own 3, and always have one with me or within easy reach. I'll try to post pics when I get home.
