What is your favorite Damascus, why?

I agree with you completely, Epsilon. I love cable and random. Of those that have a distinct pattern, twist is my favorite. I like wootz the most overall, but it is very different from the other types of damascus. I have heard some say that they really don't see a pattern to wootz at all. I kind of feel sorry for these folks as they are missing the beauty of this wonderful steel.

Best Damascus hands down goes to Devin Thomas but then having apprenticed under him for close to 4 years some would call me biased. Daryl Meier, Rick Dunkerly, Gary House, Ed Schemp and John Davis also make some killer paterns.

I have to say that my favorite to date is this nice little specimen from Shane Taylor..

OK, well as long as we've got the green light to show off some damascus... ;)

How about something from Conny Persson

...Johan Gustafsson

...Al Dippold

...and Chris Peterson

Each of these makers are unique, and each has his own style. The Swedes with their wild mosaic patterns, Johan with his colors, Mr. Dippold with his softly etched mosaics and Chris Peterson with his crazy meteorite damascus complete with temperline... I love 'em all :D

I should also mention Roger Bergh and Kaj Embretson. Steve Schwartzer and Ed Caffrey and Rick Dunkerly. John W. Smith as well, even though he seems to be more widely recognized for his fit and finish...

But one of my all time favorites has to be Jim Schmidt. I love the bold, clean patterns, the striking etch, and that amazing quality that I can't even articulate - but that certain something that just seems to make it come together so well... it's so close to perfect.

I consider cable damascus as damascus. Its not genuine damascus, just like the modern American tanto isn't a genuine tanto.
