I have 3 different levels of my favorite folder:
Level 1 is actually my favorite but I would never use this folder because it is too expensive and rare.
Level 2 is the folders I carry but would never put to hard use. Just for light cutting and then touch up sharpening.
Level 3 are the folders I USE THE MOST. These are the folders that I beat the crap out of and reach for for almost every job.
So my level 1 is my favorite but would never consider using.. Just admiring and fondling.
Good system. I guess I wouldn't be that different. I'm new to folders and haven't amassed much but when it comes to
beaters, I have a folder I like carrying around. It has more belly than my SAK, and easier to sharpen. Don't ask me what steel, not very good is the answer but lol.. it works.
An elk ridge (Master cutlery, I think) 2 1/2 incher, ER-134RB
Not very scary. Some sort of mystery steel. Cost about AUD$30, I realise this would probably cost you guys like 10 bucks in America. Yes, it's a crappy folder, but if I lose it? What they hey.... lol.
This is my first folder since the SAK, as I found I needed something that would cut cord, tubing and fabric faster and more easily than the SAK. I can't carry my fixed blades to work. So I started looking at folders and found this place!
It'll die in time, no doubt, I can sense the beginnings of lateral play already. I bought a PM2 with the intention of replacing that. Just got it today, actually, loving it. Nice FFG, good ergos. The only thing I'm not sure is if people will get scared by it. But surely, it looks like a bird not a Ka-bar. It'll be fine won't it? I'll see, maybe a delica would be better, but I thought I'd go for thicker blade stock.
The ones I really would like to carry because of coolness but wouldn't want to dull and as such do not carry, sigh, are my 2 Kershaw Emersons (6k, 4kXL). Beautiful and affordable knives these, only cons are the build quaility and steel could be better (it's ok though) and they are likely to scare people. So not a realistic frequent use carry option.
That, gentlemen, is my whole folder collection, believe it or not. Now I have a whole drawer of Ka-bars, bowies and tantos and other things but that's another story!
