What is your favorite G-shock model? The original square ones? The newer styles? Any certain model?

I got mine as a give 2-3 years ago and no problems, not even a battery change. I guess it's the old model - I dig it.

Now that I've been here, I've seen different models and by far IMO is the solar power version, someone posted it - somewhere around $116 or so? NICE.

Well I don't actually own this one YET but hopefully I will soon. This is the GR-2800-8DR Model and is Solar Powered. Some of it's features are, Solar Powered, Auto Backlight (when you tilt the watch towards your face it comes on), memo, 5 alarms, snooze, world time, stop watches and countdown timers, etc... Let us know what you end up getting (if you are).

Funny you should mention that one. I have decided between that one and the G-5600, which is also solar powered. I am not sure which one I like better. Here is a pic of the G-5600, it looks like the classic G-shock.

Lol, I had seen that one before to but it wasn't to my liking. Do you have yours yet? And If you do how do you like it?

Ryan

Cant really decide between the two. I will order one or the other though.

Model DW003S, don't know the name.

I like it because it has the wire cage like the Baby G's, but is a full size model.

Takes what I've thrown at it so far.

Hello,

I have a question about the lighting feature on the new GShocks.

How sensitive is the mechanism that causes the light to go on? For example, if I sleep on my side and then turn to my back in the middle of the nicht, does it turn on? Or if I go to drink a glass of water and it's dark, does it come on because I tilt my wrist?

FWIW, I always wear my watch with face facing down, in the direction of my palm. Does this affect the mechanism?

BIG THANKS

Mine is certainly the DW-8600 "Fisherman" G-Shock!! :D I'm surprised at how long the battery lasted cos I haven't done anything about it for more than three years..
Think the G-5600 is a great buy! Love the classic lines! :D

A few years back NATIC Research Center in cooperation with the company I work for wrote the specifications for a project called "Milshock". It involved taking the DW5600 off the shelf and modifying it to be even more military friendly. Some of the modifications are the same ones that NASA performs for thier astronauts that choose to wear the space flight approved DW5600. My favorite modification feature is the band. The watch lug spacing was milled out to 20mm to allow use of a issue nylon band to be worn over a flight suit. The spring bars were also replaced with fixed stainless pins that won't pull out. This eliminates the hard plastic band which I consider a pain. Only about 2 dozen watches were modified in the project. 4 were destroyed and not returned from testing. The Milshock project just died on the vine. The thoughts were, that a Milshock may be slightly more difficult for a grunt to operate. I had a collector in Japan offer me quite a price to get one a while back. Off topic if I'm not wearing the Milshock my next most favorite watch is a Marathon Stainless Navigator that has Tritium vials. I can see what time it is from across the room. http://www.countycomm.com/steelnav.htm. Thanks for putting up with my ramblings

I am glad that you chimed in. I know that you guys at County Comm have a lot of expertise in these issues.

These solar-powered watches presumeably work by having solar cells charge some batteries in the watch. My experience with rechargeable batteries in general has been pretty horrendous, I find they quickly start taking less and less of a charge. And don't tell me that NiMH or Li rechargeables are better, they all stink, IMO. Okay, maybe it's not that bad, but I'm a bit cynical about it.

So, that said: these solar-powered watches are trickle-charging the battery all day, every day. Has anyone had one of these watches for a couple of years? After a while, do you have to start making sure the battery sees daylight every single day, because a charge only takes it over a single night? Any other weird battery effects?

thanks!

My two favorites are my aw571-1av GAUSSMAN,ONE SWEET WATCH, HARD TO FIND THEM. And the one i wear daily the G-100. Not one problem from either one, havent changed a battery in three years and havent lost any secounds since i first set them both three years ago. :D

but I've been told that the watches do not charge a battery, but a capacitor. I have heard of appliance capacitors holding a charge for many years and then zapping someone.

Now, from what I hear, capacitors do not lose it's effectiveness over time and numbers of charges...

Any electrical engineers know what the real deal is?

I bought my 16 year old one for christmas and he is one abusive kid to that watch. the thing just keeps on ticking

I should have mine next week. I'll let you know. The G-shock I have now doesn't have that feature.

I have 3 G-Shocks, but my favorite of the 3 is the huge model DW-6600.

I got this one about '96 and it's still going strong. It seems though I've lost a "C" and a "T" along the way somewhere though :)

Edit: Changed the year I got it, still original battery btw.
