What is your favorite steel in your user 110's?

I go back and forth. As of lately (past month) I've been carrying my regular old 420hc.I had been carrying my 2 dot which is I think 440c. Before that it was my stag s30v. To me they all have advantages and disadvantages. A few years back I became a little snobbish in regards to 420hc but then came to realize its as good as its ever been for me. My favorite steel for my 110 is whatever one I'm carrying that day.:D

425mod because of the fine edge you can get with that steel and the high durability of the edge in comparison to 420hc

Haebbie

May I ask what years they used the 425? I wouldn't mind adding one to my small array and trying it out.

 I do the same thing lol I also thought a few yrs ago the 420hc was a cheaper crap steel but after using it I was deff wrong Buck does a great job on there 420hc

Yes I agree with Haebbie, roughly 10yrs.. Plus, I like the performance of 425M. Still, I'm not a steel snob and prefer the blade SHAPE over the steel. Hence, recently I've been carrying one of my 110's with a blade of 425M steel over a S30V blade. DM

Thanks Haebbie .Hummm, that means the 110 I had back in 1988 would of been a 425M. I loved that knife but it was stolen around 1990-1991. Back then I didn't pay much attention to the steel.

David, am I understanding that the shape of the blades on the 425M ones were different than current s30v?I never noticed that.

No, std. 110 blade shapes have not been changed since it's introduction. The second 110 in this photo has a skinner blade from a 1990 V52 Selector I modified and had installed into a 110 handle. This blade being of 425M steel. Thus, to me, blade SHAPE is of greater importance than blade steel. DM

David, thanks. I didn't think they had changed but wasn't 100% sure .

I get by with lowly 420HC, I've got one web special in S30V, as well as a couple of older 440C 110s. I'm incredibly satisfied with the edge quality on the 420. Edge retention isn't everything. Still initially that's what sorta made Buck, Buck. I'm not an S30V fan, but Buck has the HT right. Still, as much as I find their 420HC serviceable, I think with the profile of the 110's blade 440C is my sweet spot. The tip is pretty delicate.

Not trying to hijack the thread but can someone point me to a list of the steels that Buck has used in the 110?

I can't say I've ever been unhappy with any buck steel. I currently carry a mini alpha in s30v and an alpha dorado in 420hc. Just can't choose between them so I carry both. Love both of them. As long as they are sharp, whatever it is gets cut. Guess I'm more of a buck snob than steel snob.

We've given this before. Have you tried the search feature? From 1962-92 Buck used in order; 440C, 425M and starting in 92, 420HC. Then Limited Edition runs of many steels. DM

My favorite is 440C in the 110. I have owned my original since 1979 and recently picked up a like new 2 dot, great steel IMO. I was given a 110 with a broken tip recently and sent it to Buck where I paid for a replacement blade in 420HC. I must admit that I really like the 420HC so far, but it just does not have the "soul" that 440C has in it. There is just something about that 440C that I have grown very fond of over the years.
