What is your favorite steel on a survival knife?

Small knife: Whatever stainless Victorinox used on my Pioneer, and/or Case CV as on my Case Moose.

Large chopper: Whatever old truck spring got reworked into my Valiant Large Survival Golok.

:)

INFI, A2, 5106.

INFI is outstanding, the A2 on my barkies has been exelent and I have had good results with 5160 on other knives.

For smaller blades I'm a fan of VG10,or D2. For bigger stuff 1095 or 52100. I think a lot depends on how good the heat treat is.

Over all, I prefer Carbon Steel over Stainless.

For a folder or small to large knife I would be happy with O1, Carbon V, or 1095.

For a chopper, IMO nothing beats 5160.

That been said, if I have to go stainless, I would go with whatever Victorinox is using, AUS 8a, or 154 CM.

I honestly like 1095 a lot. I want to find out if I'd like Damascus Steel better, though.

For a small survival knife I think that H-1 would be fantastic.
I really like the Spyderco Salt series because the H-1 is totally rust-proof, yet it obtains a very fine edge and is also easy to sharpen.

For a larger chopping blade I would feel fine with 1095.

Lateral strength is good in a large knife, so high carbon steel is prolly best. I like A2 personally. 1095 and 0-1 seem to be well-respected.

Smaller knife, S30V is very tough, quite difficult to sharpen though.

Hmmm... VG-10 or 154CM.

For last 4-5 years I use only fixed blades made of 1095,folder is Victorinox Green Hunter.I find blades made of 1095 dependable and not expensive.
