What is your favorite survival knife?

Victornox SAK, or Spyderco folder (50/50 serations), and my CS Recon Scout in kydex sheath, or 12" Ontario machette.

Looks like the Victornox "Huntsman" would be a good choice. A little saw (to cut notches n snare spring traps) sissors, and those good tweasters to get stickers out and ticks off. May need to get that model now!

Also carry a very small and light DMT course or medium flat diamond stone sharpener.

Esteemed colleague Cliff. I am afraid I must respectfully disagree with your interpertation of the question as being what knives you would take with you, GIVEN TIME TO PREPARE. One implication in any item of survival gear is that accessability is paramount. Any sudden, unexpected event can leave you with what you have with you.

I teach my kids this; I call it the body carry concept. If there is something you may really need someday, carry it with you, on your body. That is the ONLY way you can be sure to have it with you when unexpected events confront you with a need.

Here is what I carry for survival: a pygmy ATAK2, on belt, openly carried. A Kit Carson #18 folder with CPM 420V blade. A Gerber Covert folder. A Buck small Ti folder (on keyring). Also, in the pockets of my chamois shirt, a Kit Carson #16 long, with Stellite blade and c-fiber scales. It weighs 2 1/2 oz., and has a blade length over 4". Also I carry an Umfaan in the other pocket of my shirt. Also, inside a leather musette bag I carry everywhere with me are at any given time 3 or 4 folders: An Ernie Emerson CQC6, a couple of Sebenzas (style and size differ at different times), a Kit Carson #18 folder with Talonite blade, a Leatherman tool, and a SAK. I carry several more blades in each of my cars, including a full size ATAK2, SAK, and Gerber LST. Knife related items are DMT sharpener, mini steel, Tuf Cloth.

You never know when stuff is going to happen. Walt

Wellif we are talking unlimited, then here goes. My kit. H.I 15 inch Ang Khola, since it can out chop everything, except another H.I., Busse, BM or Steel Heart II, Mission MPF, and several other folders by spyderco most likely, since they are stouter than benchmade. My Rekat folder, Leatherman supertool, SOG tool and a machete since they are cheap.

If as walt suggests, I can ponly take what I have with me at the time or in the car, well then I usually have my Spy Mil. in pocket, along with another two folders, either BM's or Spy.'s. In the car I always have my HI khukuri's(one of them) and a large fixed blade, one of many good manufactured ones.

So what the heck are all these other knives I have for?

No disagreement Walt :

f there is something you may really need someday, carry it with you, on your body. That is the ONLY way you can be sure to have it with you when unexpected events confront you with a need

That is exactly what I meant :

The only ones out of that list that I don't have on me at any given moment is the last type. I don't wear it to work or when I go to town for shopping (but it will be in the car). Any other time I wear that as well.

If I even think I will need it, I am wearing it.

My point in making the first statement was simply that "what I am carrying" is not really that helpful to the person who is trying to figure out what he should be *looking for* in a survival knife. Thus the question "what would you take if you could have anything" is much more valuable to the original poster.

Why do you say Spyderco is stouter than Benchmade?I broke the tip off an older Endura it seemed like fairly easily and the tip on my CQC from Benchmade seems stouter.Have you had trouble with a Benchmade breaking? If you really want stout I have tried breaking my Cold Steel Voyager tanto 4" and just about can't.It is tough. It may not hold an edge forever but nothing does on the stuff I have to cut and it sharpens relatively easily and quickly and takes a good sharp edge.

I would pick my cold steel outdoorsman. It looks similar to the tanto's but has a nice kurved blade. On the blade's back there is a secondary edge for hacking. This is my choice for a fixed blade. For a folding survival knife it is my victorinox with the locking mechanism and the wood saw. What i like about both knives is: they are stainless.

I AGREE WITH RED MAG. THE CS OUTDOORSMAN IS A GREAT KNIFE.THE KRATON HANDLE WITH A STEEL TANG IS SUPERB.THE FIT AND FINISH OF THIS KNIFE ESPECIALLY THE BLADE IS TOPS!
MY KNIFE, HOWEVER, DOES NOT HAVE THE SHARPENED PORTION ON THE SPINE. IT HAS A LONG RUN OF THUMB GROOVES.ANOTHER GREAT "SURVIVAL PACKAGE" WOULD BE ALASKA KNIVES BROWN BEAR COMBO KNIFE AND CLEVER. IT COMES WITH A HIGH QUALITY SHEATH AND SHARPENING STEEL.ON A DAILY BASIS I FEEL FAIRLY WELL PREPARED FOR ANY EMERGENCY BY CARRYING THE FOLLOWING ON MY PERSON: RIGHT POCKET- SMALL SEBENZA,LEFT-MINI DYAD USED AS A MONEY CLIP, CARIBENER USED AS A KEY RING CARRIES A CS TUFF-LITE, SAK HIKER,
AND PHOTON II LIGHT.

I JUST RECENTLY ORDERED AN AL MAR/REEVES 7" FIXED BLADE COLLABORATION.IT BASICALLY IS A SABLE MODEL WITH AL MAR STAMPINGS ON SPECIAL SHEATH AND BLADE. THE SABLE BLADE SHAPE IS GREAT FOR ALL USES.

GOOD LUCK!!

m, sorry to answer you late, but the only reason I say stouter is that the spyderco blades are thicker in any given size range. In fact I don't even know if I have seen a 0.12 inch thick spyderco blade yet. Even the smaller ones are a true 0.125 inch or more. That little extra gives me more blade strength. As for locks, I think they are pretty close to equal in that department. You may have broke a tip, but fact is you are more likely to break a thin blade than a thicker blade.

May I say about other tools?
And may I ask you whether you can survive with only knives if you are alone in deep Alaskan wood?
I do love my knives, but I know they are not enough when I lose my way in mountain, drifted to uninhabited island,or in Amazon.
Rope,A lighter,lether gloves,sorp,water cleaner,a bottle of whisky,plastic bags,clean bleached cotten,waterproof cloth,needle-strings,empty bottles,empty cans.....I'm quite sure they are more usual than knives in such a situation.
I want such tools that blade exchange system of hachet-hunmer,pickax,shovel,sickel,and saw with foldable tough handle.
If there is canned butter,it is great calorie and candle.Canned rock candy is great, too.

I feel good my Buck#650 nighthawk and Coldsteel trailmaster, wenger soldier, and some other small knives.
What I don't have now but available,I want Buck #187T Interpid small tanto,#692Z4 Vanguard-BuckCote,and Randall M1-7" lether handle.
What is not exist;BuckMaster's blade with handle of nighthawk or interpid,Microtech USSOCOM 5"blade,Randall kukuri, and NEXT U.S.ARMY BAYONET!!!
