I am not real knowledgeble, but it sounds like a traditional tanto and a drop point, are nearly the same. If anyone has any pics maybe I could understand this design a little better. However, it sounds like these two types are the most popular.

The pic turned out pretty lousy, but it shows the tip section of a tanto of mine.

Standard hira-zukuri fare, I think the pic does show a little bit of the curve in the blade. Be warned: BIG pic. Besides, traditional tanto isn't a knife
