What is your favourite or oldest Schrade???

Rusty, I'm not sure if LT definitively answered that question in that topic. I also have one of the unmarked Schrades and have held a S&W Bowie at a local Gun Show and thought they were very different knives. Aside from different handle shapes, slightly different brass guards and different sized pommels, the blades themselves are very different. I guess that the S&W version still could have been made by Schrade, but S&W (before their contract with Taylor) used to make some very nice knives, or maybe they never made anything and someone else made them for them. ??????

i was told anything and everything got winchester branding . most of it was cheap shit made in china , thats the way it is here in australia . its cheap shit , sold at high prices for what they are. the american made winchesters are nice though , the ones made by bluegrass cutlery . we have smith and wesson here in oz , but i`ve never looked at any of it

Tim, the Smith & Wesson Bowie and the Schrade Bowie are not the same knife even though they are somewhat similar. I could be wrong, but my recollection is that the S&W knife was actually made by S&W back when they were still in the knife business. Look at the photos carefully, the real Schrade is on top:

Yes, I think your right!!! I remmember, now that you mention it!!! I had one that looked the same as that Smith and Wesson bowie except it was completely plain, It was advertised as a Schrade I purchased it and when it arrived it looked nothing like my other geniune Schrade bowie (my etched one).
I thought it was just an earlier different model but now that you mention it I doupt it was a Shrade bowie at all for the following reasons:

Firstly, handle was completely different it was fatter and was square cut down to the crossguard (you can almost see this in pic of Smith and Wesson).

Secondly, The blade shape did appear to be the same but the finish was a smooth mirror finish completely different from a plain Schrade bowie which has what is called a "Brushed Metal Finish" this is not a high gloss reflective finish like on the Smith and Wesson.

I think we are looking at 2 completely different knives here.

redshanks, the wood handle on the S&W is far thicker than on the plain Schrade Bowies also, I remember hearing or reading somewhere that S&W did not make their fist two or three knife models, I am also led to beleive from different sources, that the Texas Bowie was S&W first release, definatively who made them is still vague, maybe somewhere down the line we will find out, somebody must know.

To add Timstools, they are different with several aspects as mentioned, you would at first assume that they are from different manufacturers, as with Schrade and other knife manufacturers very similar models exist. I would really like to know the maker was of the Texas Bowie.

Yes Rusty I want to know as well, nothing conclusive yet, just noting differences, perhaps someone will know for sure, could be different but still same Schrade maker.

Ive been trying to track down another plain Schrade Bowie with a Mirror finish blade for a while now since I sold the other one I had (was imperfect). I havent have any luck finding one at all and I think these posts may indicate why. All the ones Ive seen have the normal Schrade Bowie finish on the blades. Perhaps I should be looking more towards Smith and Wesson to find one????

Guys, I'm fairly certain that even given the similarity between the S&W Texas Ranger Bowie and the Schrade Bowie, Schrade had nothing the do with the manufacture of the S&W.

The Schrade Bowie was used for several different commemoratives and most notably, the 100 year engraved anniversary knife encrusted with diamonds. I have never seen a Schrade knife that looked like the S&W version.

S&W though, did come out with their own line of knives (back in the 80's I think) and this set marked their first offering, which includes the Bowie knife in question:

You can see the similarity of the knives with each other and the others in the set don't resemble anything made by Schrade. This is a plain S&W Bowie:

Many of these S&W knives were sold in either finished or kit form and this is an example of one of the kit knives:

It's still possible that S&W didn't really make the knives I'm showing here, but if not, I don't think they were made by Schrade.

that really shakes things up, In the trio of pics, look how the blade guard is thinner in the close up pics, the sweep on the wood is more pronounced than in the top picture of the three, another variation to add to the mix.

Redshanks has posted a slightly larger picture of the 2 knives seen together in link below.

I shows more clearly the marked differences between these two knives. The handle, crossguard, pomel, blade shape, blade clip point, blade width, blade stamp (none on Schrade bowies), blade edge transition to handle and possibly also blade length are all different. See link:
