the lightweight poly-nylon, or sil-nylon kind. Also, is there much of a difference between the two. I'm more interested in longevity than weight. ETA: I'm not looking to break the bank either.

As for tarp size, I believe the ones that I carry are 6' x 8'. I like having two rolled up, one for shelter and one for the ground. Anything bigger and I suppose I could make a tarp house 
I think the next size up is 10' x 10', which would be a little big for me on my small overnights.
When it comes to gear, I LIKE the best, but I'm typically a cheapskate (on my stuff) unless we're talking about my knife
The tarps that I USE are from wally world and hold up just fine.

I have a 6x8 equinox that I can't complain about, although 6x9 would be ideal (I have never seen it offered though).
I am getting ready to buy a 10X10, but you can definitely make better use of a square over a rectangle.
But technically a square IS a rectangle
