What is your minimum steel?

For a small knive that I just use for small task like cutting a bit of string, buts of wrapping etc... AUS8

For my EDC hmmm ATS-34 or maybe ATS-55

When knowing I'll walk in very dark, dangerous alleys

;) CP440V (S60V)

AUS-8 is minimum although I might buy an AUS-6 knife on occasion.

For more expensive knives, I like at least ATS-34.

It all depends on how cool the knife is, and how much it costs. 2 of my all time favs, the timberline mini pitbull fixed, and BM556 are both made of "cheap" steel.

1084 in carbon steels
420HC in stainless
Of course with swords/longer daggers the acceptable carbon steels would change to the 1050-1080 range, with 1095 heat-treated only from American companies, and all stainless out.
