What is your opinion of knife destruction test videos?

Its good to know how strong the knives are or not but a waist of time and money as well
Also they not good for my heart and nerves🤪😂

While I am not deeply disturbed by knife destruction tests, I am not a fan. While they can be informative and educational in that it helps to understand a knifes limits and what will most definitely make it fail, I do not like them because of the “trickle down effect” is causes on the industry. While we all know it is most definitely knife abuse, the manufacturers see this and know some jackass is going to hammer it into a log and try to pry it out as a “tip test” then when the tip breaks, they say “oh, epic fail”
So, the manufacturers have started designing their knives to attempt to survive this nonsense and you end up with a sharpened pry bar instead of a nice slicey blade. Prime example of this is the Case Kinzua, I was excited when I saw this blade online but when I saw it in person and looked at how thick the blade stock was, I had to pass. I cannot completely fault Case because they knew as soon as they released it, the knife would get torture tested and their reputation would get questioned right out of the gate. I feel bad for manufacturers today because in this modern Information Age, critics are only a click away and when you try to make everybody happy you usually end up with a product that is not really great at anything

If it's not your knife or your $ involved in the testing, why should it matter?

I don't go out of my way to watch them but I usually find them "interesting," especially if it's a knife that I already own or am thinking about buying.

Like the tests in "Forged in Fire," they may not be "realistic" but they are almost always "entertaining."

Doesn't emotionally bother me at all.
These videos are all obsolete and mean nothing in my eyes.

Waste of time and energy.
They have no value.
You can break anything if you try hard enough.

Generally I like them if the point of the destruction is comparative testing.

If you haven’t seen any of the old NOSS videos you should check out the link on the third post.

I enjoyed watching his videos because although the tests clearly became abusive, they also started out with simple knife tasks and slowly worked up through more challenging tasks until failure.

NOSS used the same set of tests on many different knives (although admittedly they weren’t highly controlled) so you could get a real sense of what they could take. This was good information imo.

Some folks just like to break stuff for views and I have zero appreciation for that.

A real knife destruction test should contain at least three examples of the same model.

Hardness should be tested beforehand and tests should be performed in extreme heat and cold.

I'd also like to see some graphs and statistics please...

One can dream...:)

Knife snuff porn vs actual proof testing , totally different !

I see very little value to the wanton spastic destruction type videos but proper proof testing can be vital, especially for hard use / survival gear to know its limits .

Dumb. You can "test" a car by driving it into a brick wall but prove nothing.
Well I mean... yeah... Joe Blow does an impact test and it might not prove anything, but then there's the IIHS safety tests that prove quite a bit.
It just underlines the fact that "how" you run a test is of critical importance.

But, then again... I won't feel too worried about batoning a Mora after watching a guy bang on one in a vice a bunch with a sledgehammer.
So yeah, maybe not scientific, but not devoid of value.

Is there a place where this is reliably known to occur?
... asking for a friend.
An old friend once told me...
"There are moments in a Man's Life that define him. Sometimes it's a Wedding Day, or the Birth of a first Child."
"But nothing can affect you the way that seeing an illegal alien get run over on the Freeway does!"

My guess? Check the Border!

(😁 JK...)

My opinion, irrelevant to my knife usage. Even in an extreme situation there’s usually something else that can be done or in a different way and make do without destroying a good knife. If it is destroyed what good is it then ? Work smarter not harder.

Yeah... just like watch pedestrians get hit by trucks...

This thread is like an onion revealing more bizarre layers as we go.
