I'm doing a little research here on what size fixed blades people use. I'm interested in knowing what length of Fixed blade you all prefer for edc, bushcraft, and hunting?

While I know one size doesn't fit all and certain sizes work better for certain jobs. I'm wanting to know what you all use?

Here is what I use::

My edc and Hunting blade:

Raker BOB3: blade of 3 1/4" and OAL of 7 1/4

Bushcraft/camping: I actually use either a Coal Creek Forge Hawk or small hatchet and my hunting blade. I also pack my Raker BOB1 (Blade of 7" and OAL of 12 1/2) in my truck or packs. Gives me a little bigger knife when I need it. Honestly, it doesn't get used as much.

Hiking or camping, a 9.5" blade or larger. I always have a pocket knife on me too.

I am actually a light backpacker. I shave ounces off of everything except knives and firearms.

I prefer around a 3" blade for edc such as the one pictured below. I also like this size for cleaning animals. This size can do 95% of what I need to do. When I need, I go to my Bravo I or II depending one what needs to be done. I also use a BK9 when I need to chop, but it rarely gets used for anything else.

4~4.5" for fixed blade, anything longer than that I would be using another tool; saw, axe...etc.
3~3.5" for EDC fixed/folder.

My Izula is pretty much the only fixed blade I carry :) Overall Length: 6.75" Blade Length: 2.63"

If its for chopping, which is pretty much all iuse fix blades for, over 12" with 14 " being prefererred

I carry a small bark river every day, one of the following: pro scalpel II, PSK, Little Creek or Colonial Patch.

When out hiking I'll take an Ontario Rat 3, Bark River Gunny, condor kephart or becker bk11.

Camping I'll have one of the smaller knives from above and a Bravo 1 and either a small hawk/hatchet and maybe a Junglas or BK9 for fun.

Basically everything I need a knife for I can take care of with a 3-4 inch blade. That's excluding kitchen work or chopping down trees.

For general woods use, I tend to gravitate toward 7" blades like the KaBar USMC or the Becker BK7.

The knives I use the most are in the 3,5 to 5 inch blade length range, with 4 inches being my favourite. I own shorter and longer knives, but I don't use them as much.

My EDC is a BHK Classic Stallion with a 2.5" blade. I usually have it on my hip when hiking. I also use it for cleaning fish & small game.

For camping & long hikes, I carry a Bark River UL Bushcrafter, which has a 3.25" blade.
The largest blade that I like using is 4.5".

Big knives are fun to play with, but not efficient for me when doing work outside of the kitchen.
I'd rather use a saw or hatchet/axe.

The fixed blades I use are between 3-4". I only use my fixed blades for notches and finer woodworking tasks, so I don't have need of anything larger.

3.5 to 4.5 will suffice for all tasks except chopping and splitting wood (6 to 10 are used for that)

Depends. At home (northern Michigan) 4.5-6" blades (with a good finger choil for fine work). Out and in the city 2.5-3" blade, no longer than 7" overall.

But for the larger blades, I'm more of a fan of thinner, lighter, full-flat grind and possibly convex edged. A good knife to me should not feel "bulky" in hand.

My EDC fixed blade has about a 2.5" blade length which covers most of my uses including woods walks if I have it with me. My preferred fixed blade carry length in the outdoors is 4-6". I own larger bladed fixed blades but seldom carry them. If I plan on chopping, I carry a short machete such as the Condor Golok or Pack Golok.
