What is your preferred handle length for a 3.5 lb chopping axe?

Spoke shaves, Boys...spoke shaves. Operator, I found your spoke shave in my desk at the office a couple days ago. Oops...meant to take it to the post office. I'll get it there this week, Bud.

Most of my full size axes are 36". A fairly recent acquisition of a 32" Connecticut Collins Legitimus has changed my world view. Best, most enjoyable chopper I've used to date.

Same here Memphis talking about the Legitimus.
Except mine is right at 29"!
And as Frank says; it has a "deep bellied handle".

Hello again 'Big O'. As a young man I worked in the Queensland bush. Worked side by side with a gang of bushmen. Most of us used forestry supplied four and a half pound Hytest axes. Some preferred 32" haft and some preferred 36". I love 32". My height is about 5' 10". 32" seems to give me good speed on impact and good accuracy. My Dad who was about the same height as me just loved 36".

I must say though...if an axe feels a little bit uncomfortable to start with, it doesn't take too long to adjust to the feel.

regards...Frank

Excellent point, I will take that advice and give this council jersey a workout. Damn good point.

Thanks!

I was out in the woods yesterday, working on cutting some wood.

Fell 6 trees, all via axe.

......The Black Donald, 4 lb dayton head on 36 inch handle - used it on a big quaken asp, approx 28 inches across.

Damn, dude!

That's some serious timber chopping! How are your arms today?

Or rasp and belt sander.

Yeah those Collins CT's are crazy choppers.

This is an old thread, but what the heck.
I recently got a pretty good deal on some NOS LaPierre 28" full size eye handles.
Does anyone here use a full size axe on a 28" handle?
I prefer a shorter handle between 30 and 32", but I have never used a full size axe on a 28" haft.
Any thoughts and or opinions on this?

Thanks :)

I have one full-size axe on a slim 30" full-size handle. Even though it balances at the head yet when you wield it, it feels a little head heavy. Mine does have a longer felling bit which makes it bit heavy so this may affect the balance feel since it wants to rotate in your hand. However I still don't think I would like a 28" handle on a 3.5 lb. head unless perhaps a more compact profile would make the balance feel better. I generally prefer 28" for a boys axe and 32" for a full size.

Is it a legitimus Connecticut? If so, I just got one of those with a deep bellied fawns foot. Total length is 29" and man is that thing a helluva chopper!
I have to say that I am very surprised and pleased with that axe. It quite possibly may be the best axe I have ever used.

You guessed it, it's a Legitimus.
