What is your preferred steels on Spyderco knives?

I love S35VN. Takes a razor sharp edge and holds a working edge for quite a while, and is easy to bring back that razor edge on.

Anything non stainless.
Unfortunately, not much selection.
CRUWEAR, M4, HAP40, 52100, K390, 3V, Super Blue, 10V, D2, and I think some more mules have featured non SS.

Yeah, I was talking regular production, the stuff you can buy any time, not sprints, exclusives, mules, and other discontinued knives .
But even including those, the selection of knives is still limited. For instance you can have a sage any way you want it, as long as it's s30v. That and vg10 pretty much dominate what's available.

I'm thankful Spyderco offers what they do in non stainless steels and realize they are just meeting demand of the 99% that are in love with shiney fragile blades that rarely see anything tougher than paper envelopes, loose threads, and apples.

This thread reminds me of my years on a popular acoustic guitar forum. People would describe nuanced tonalities based on exotic wood choices for "mid-tech" and custom backs, sides and tops. Everyone was looking for their grail. Sound familiar? And like a good HT, guitar woods greatly depend on who the maker is and their experience.

I'm curious about M4 - from all accounts a great steel, with the caveat that it's not stainless - a deal-breaker for some. Would love to see examples of natural patina (not "rust" as some equate). A naturally-aged blade with time written on its face can be a beautiful thing.
