What is the most you will spend for a knife that you are actually going to use everyday?

I am not talking about a special purpose knife like a self defense weapon or a hunting knife. I am talking about that knife that you will open mail with one minuit and cut rope with the next. The knife that may be abused but you won't shy away from using.

I think the price point is going to depend on what people use their knife for. If you are gentile with your knife and only use it around the office, I am sure you won't mind spending a few hundred since you know you won't break it or lose it. If you work in a job where the knife gets rough treatment, I doubt many people are going to spend big bucks only to have to replace it every few months.

For me, I work in construction of sorts. I put elevators in. I don't abuse my knife but I do need a good one that can do what I ask of it. I carry a $100-150 Benchmade 921s Switchback.

It seems to have what I need in a knife. Mostly it is fast to open and close so I use it 40-50 times a day. Most of the time it just to open a plastic bag or cut a wire tie. Sometimes, it gets more intense work like cutting thin steel or wire. I cut a lot of cardboard as well.

It cost more than I would like to lose but it is also the only knife that does what I want with such ease. It is a great knife and anything less would be noticable.

buy the best you can afford, there is NO other answer.

I agree with your original post kgriggs8. My price was based on EDC for common chores. If it were a gents knife, I might shell out more money, but I wouldn't use it in the same way. I'm scared to use my Yojimbo on stuff because the tip looks so damn thin. I'd hate to ruin the look.

I think the same way about my EDC that kgriggs8 does. It's a knife. To me that means it is a tool. It won't be abused but it will be well used. And it could be lost. My pricepoint for what I am willing to put at risk in my pocket is lower than his. About $75 is the most I would spend. Most of mine are less than $50. I take my time and pick my knives careflully. I find I can get knives with good steel and good fit and finish in my price range.

That was worthless and compleatly missed the point of the question. :jerkit:

nice use of that smiley, so if I say I paid 575 for my current edc am I a :jerkit: in your opinion?

If I do not agree with you I am a :jerkit:

Roger that

My two current EDC knives cost $8 and $20. I'd be willing to spend more if there was something I really liked.

Whatever what I want costs. Currently, $455 is the highest I've gone on an EDC. I don't buy anything but users.

Microtech Lightfoot LCC, micarta, AL bolsters, plain edge satin blade - $225. Letter opener, cardboard, plastic bags. Will not fear to put it to heavier use if called upon to do so. Bought one as a collector's piece, loved it so much I bought one as an EDC.

I've been known to carry more than one at a time. Front pocket is usually SAK or some variation there of. This is the one for opening mail and lighter work. Usually $30 max.

Back pocket has larger and / or sturdier blade for cardboard, cable ties and tougher stuff. Soon a Sebenza will riding back there, so I guess I'm OK with higher priced for a BPEDC, but previously it was a Kudu, Ka-Bar folder or Buck 110. Kudu was CHEAP and I've had the other two so long I don't remember what I paid.

I carry a Zero Tolerance ZT-302 and I use it for everything I need. No safe Queens here. Thanks, Jason

Oh, and a Victorinox pen knife. Gotta have those tweezers and toothpic! And scissors for loose threads!

Well, I just bought a Crusader Forge at a pretty penny, and have already cut logs, opened mail...opened myself thanks to a friend, and made a sammich for lunch. So thats it then

I've been dealing with this question ever since I bought a small Sebenza a bit over a year and a half ago. For general EDC purposes, I don't mind using it, but for harder use and at the firehouse, it rarely comes out of pocket. Instead, I reach for some in the $50-100ish range.
That's probably the single biggest reason I haven't been able to bring myself to saving up for a custom.Based on where I'm currently at, I doubt I'd actually use such an expensive knife.(I don't mean just carrying, but real use)

Somewhere between $100.00 and $120.00 for my Ritter RSK-1 and Benchmade 710D2. I have some small EDC fixed blades from Charles May and Scott Gossman, that cost more, but the folders get EDC'd more these days.

For many years, I held myself to a "no more than $100.00" for knives, but I have found that sometimes it does pay to go higher for some knives.

I think Ron LaBella's comment of "buy the best you can afford" has a great deal of merit, which is why it's good for knife folks to never just slam another guys knife, because it's not as high-end or expensive as yours. Not everybody can afford what another can, but at the end of the day, were all knife-nuts! :D

About $70 would be tops. Hard for me to justify spending any more when there are great knives like the SAKs, Byrds, Kershaws, Carbon Steel Case, etc. to be had below that. Sure, one might not have the most exotic steel of the moment at that price, but plenty of work can be done with proven steel that is cheap. Plus, who wants to lose a $300 knife??? Everybody loses a knife now and then, no matter how careful they are.
