What is your primary purpose of carrying your EDC knive?

i am very suprised that no one even really mentioned the knife being carried to protect yourself.

ok ok, so i am a MBC nut.. yea ok. however, when one carries a knife, one should think of all the possible scenarios where your knife could come into play, and in a SD situation, one wouldnt be happier to have a knife, or morph your EDC knife into a SD weapon.

I carry 2 knives. Right now it is a Benchmade folder and a spyderco salt 1. i use the spyderco salt 1 for everyday cutting and the BM for a little of the same but it has been my SD blade. i have it on my right hip and can deploy it in about a second. i recently ordered the spyderco karambit for my main CCW. this knife will be ONLY used for SD. so it will last forever because God willing, it wont ever be used for that.. however, carrying with this in mind and training and practicing will and can save your life. i just thought it was necessary to add this to the discussion that has been enlightening. the main reason i carry my spydercos are for regular cutting and for Self Defense. but thats just coming from an old MBC nut.

and for the rook...... MBC - martial blade craft

also, knives make a great SD option for those in communist states like CA, NY, and MA - that usely frown upon gun rights. getcha a good knife and practice with it and you have beaten the system and have a tool that can be morphed into a protection device should it ever have to be.

He used to say "Any man too lazy to keep his knife sharp, is too lazy to give you a goods days work."

I like that saying! I was taught at an early age to sharpen knives and have always been amazed at how many men don't have the first idea on how to properly sharpen a knife.

I carry a knife mainly because I carry a gun. I carry at work and off duty, so I believe that you should have some sort of back-up weapon in case you have to fight to maintain control of your primary weapon. I also carry a knife for utility purposes.....You never know when you may need to cut something, and it's always better to have, and not need.
I also just love knives. I consider myself somewhat of a collector, and my knife collection is starting to rival my firearm collection. :D

There are lots. But some days it comes down to simply wanting to NOT be like those assholes that can A) smugly say they don't carry a knife, B) gape at yours and make some stupid comment about either "killing someone" or "Grandpa and whittlin,'" and C) ask you to cut something for them, all within about 60 seconds.

we can't all be from Tennessee now, can we. ;)

haha, well here in tennessee, we welcome anyone and everyone to our state. we are very gun and knife friendly. hell we are friendly all around.

As many have mentioned a knife is good for cutting things that need to be cut. Sometimes you don't get to choose what needs to be cut, the situation dictates and time is relevant. Take the child trapped in the wreckage of a car after an accident. None of the people initially arriving had a knife to cut the seatbelt and get him out of the car -- so he sat there, fortunately there was no fire. After reading that article in the paper I bought one of the fully serrated Spyderco knives (think Rescue) specifically for my truck's console. That said, the EDC in my pocket could also cut a seatbelt, but the Spyderco does it better.

My question is why wouldn't you carry a knife? Is it a legality issue or do you just not want to bother being prepared with a basic tool of man's evolution. Tool production and use is what made us what we are.

If you decide to buy a knife, forget the SAK advice and buy a real knife. Later if you still want to acquire more knives you can buy an SAK as a toy or sort of curiousity, but keep a good heavy duty knife handy at all times.

Nolan

Always makes me grin when I see people consider a SAK a toy. Oh well, more swiss goodness for me I suppose.

I used to carry SAKs because they have so many uses and because I admired the design/engineering of them. I got a little more specialized as I got older. Where I used to whittle with my pocket knife, I now have dedicated whittling knives. Where I used to reach for my SAK to open a bottle of wine or tighten down a screwm I now have other tools for those purposes. Consequently, my EDC has become a single blade folding knife, usually a Spyderco Native or Chinese folder, or, during farmer's market season, an Opinel #8 carbon steel blade.

Man you got that right!! I used to try to convince folks how good a real SAK is and how useful it is and such. Anymore though, unless somebody has a genuine question, I just leave it alone and let them think what they want to think. It's kinda interesting though, I found a thread from a few months ago where they were talking about guns vs. knives and if you had to pick one over the other etc.. Anyways, Nolan made a comment something to the effect that he would rather have a gun because any ole knife would generally get the job done. I guess that a SAK doesn't fit the bill of "any ole knife"! HaHa, folks sure can be funny about things.

I carry knives because it feels good. I like knives.
Time from time I need to open boxes, packages, cut some food, cut something, when I am working on my yard; it will be extremly dificult without knife. Knife is a good tool.

I carry a knife to cut things with. I find it very handy. Plus I just like to have one around. ;)

I've carried a pocket knife for 50 years and I feel naked without one. Today, the only time my knife was used was to remove the industrial strength wrapper from vending machine sandwiches. I also opened two co-workers sandwiches at the same time. The co-workers were both nice people, but not high enough on the evolutionary scale to be considered tool users. :D

My knife is a useful tool, and one that I have been carrying for 32 years. I feel naked with out one. I use my knife to vut things.
