What it's all about...

so maybe im just ignorant but whats with the fire under the shelter?

When I dragged the tarp out that was full of bug filled water pools, the ground was so wet that a found a newt (other people used the shelter and didn't fold the tarp, evidently).
The fire dried the ground, and made it nice and warm. It took till about 2am, due to there being a shelter to avoid burning down, but the ground was still nice and warm 7 hours later when my dad got up. Went from cold, damp mud to a nice place to lay down.

... I am curious, and please forgive my if this is a dumb question, but why two fires and so close together?

Answered earlier in the thread. To dry the ground under the lean-to.

hmm wow I couldn't be any blinder; my bad, thanks for clarifying. :o

Ha! No problem. I read it twice before I understood. At first glance I thought it was just to warm the ground. Some people do that. In fact, he reported that the ground retained warmth all night. But was mainly to dry it out.
