What kind of a plane is this?

Is this a B29? Flew over the house on Memorial Day. I had my camera out. No wonder these planes scared our enemies when they were coming. This thing was huge and loud. I was glad it was "one of ours"! What a truly awesome thing of beauty to watch.

Looks like a C-130 to me.

They've been around for a long time. Also the platform on which the AC-130 is built.

The C-130 isn't a plane to be afraid of, unless you're considering what it's carrying. The AC-130 on the other hand- is the most formidable air-to ground weapons system ever fielded. One of those will absolutely ruin your whole day, if you're on the wrong side of it.

I look at what appears to be a door in the last picture to get an idea of the overall size of the thing and I can't believe how big it must be.

Hey Jack, where are you located? Like others have said, it's a C-130 transport - the Thunderbirds, who were on Long Island this weekend, were using a few of these as their supply planes instead of their typical C-17.

Nowhere near as big as a C-5A Galaxy. If you're interested, check around and see if an Air Force base near you is having any airshows this summer. If you're interested in military aircraft, you'd enjoy going to one.

If you go to an air show and see the blue angels, they show one of these take off with jato rockets. Pretty freaky seeing it pitch up and take off like the space shuttle.

This is the B-29 flying past Mt. Fuji in WW2. My Grandpa flew 35 missions to Japan as a CFC gunner. I have this almost exact picture he took from the top bubble, as well as many more.

Too bad it wasn't a Spectre or Spooky gunship version. Now that's some serious intimidation value!

C-130; A reliable short take-off and landing workhorse. It's used for most everything including jumps.

C-130s are always overhead here. Lots of A-10s too, and the occasional F-16.

the grand old c130 best all around do all air craft in history, that is naturaly second to the C47.

Coolest sighting I've ever had was from the Domelands Wilderness just northwest of Edwards AFB. There was a B2 and an F22 in the air together. When they fly the B2 over the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day it never does anything interesting. But when training with the F22, it made some impressive maneuvers.

Those JATOs must be hard on the paint job back near the tail!

The AC-130 gunship is the one I'm really glad is on our side.

mycroftt,

Cool! When hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains we periodically see a B17 and B24 flying up toward Ventura and back. The young people on the trails generally have NO IDEA what they are. Sad.
