Howdy. I am interested in purchasing this anvil. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200820587899&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123 .
I am wondering if anyone could tell me anything about it? When I asked the seller if they knew if it was cast iron or steel or both, and if they knew the maker, I got the following response:" a magnet sticks to it, and if the numbers/letters i mentioned in description dont help i am truly sorry. i honestly havent even been able to get anyone to tell me what it is that ive asked. i just have come up with the bick part because it looks similar to other bick anvils i have seen but none as large as this one". ... and... what exactly is "bick" (im a newb). Any and all info is apperciated. Thanks guys.

Not one you want, methinks. Not heavy enough and might be a cheapo imported cast iron junker(but, I'm sure an expert here will chime in soon)

Well. The reason nobody knows is that this particular item was posted in Iforgeiron's Anvil section and despite ample discussion nobody knew what it was. Anvil? Maybe? Could it be used as one? Sure. It would likely be useful if you make a lot of blacksmith items with scrolls etc.

I believe it is an old tinsmiths/coppersmiths/sheet metal work anvil. The light duty base and top shape imply working around bent surfaces. The long and deep throats imply working in recesses. The grooving down the center implies hammering with a raising hammer. The amount of rounding and denting in the work areas implies it is not hard.

My best guess it that it isn't for forging. All that said, for $25 I would buy it in a flash if I was around Cincinnati, and I could pick it up without shipping. There are lots of shop tasks that don't need a forging anvil.

thanks b.s. kind of what i was thinking. about buying it (had no clue what it was used for/what kind). im going to see how cheap it goes for. im close to cinci, so no shipping
