What Kind of fishing lures should go in a survival kit?

Wow. Its been a while since i've last made a post so forgive me if i start rambling.

pwork: Never tried that dogfood trick for catfish but have used that method for castnetting shrimp. They guy that showed me suspended a few cans in the water at a pier and waited for the shrimp to come up and start flickering about. Then we made a few throws with the 6 foot castnets and waited again for another 15 minutes.

Back to lures:

I would say it would depend on where you are living. For freshwater where i'm at you can always catch a few perch walking the bank jigging up and down with a really small black width yellow striped H&H beetle on a 1/32 or 1/16 ounce jighead. Focus on stumps and/or steep drop offs on the bank. Bass also inhale the lure.

For inshore saltwater I'd go width a small white H&H beetle on a 1/8 or 1/4 ounce jighead.

As for spoons, the 1/3 ounce silver sidewinder has caught me plenty of bass, speckled trout, and redfish. However, to properly make use of a spoon like the sidewinder you really do need a rod and reel. This lure darts from side to side on an even and steady retrieve. A better spoon for veritcle jigging would be something like a Kastmaster. Its just a slab of pot metal with a thick chrome finished that sinks very quickly. This link

has a ton of good information about using spoons. If you are into fishing saltwater check out the rest of that guy's webpage. Very insightful articles.

For freshwater fishing information you can spend hours reading the bass forums at www.wmi.org. I found this forum a few years ago and they've always been very useful about various tackle and techniques.

Rooster tails are great for kits. It also depends on where you are going to be some places I go I throw in some salmon eggs, although eggs wouldn't be good for a kit that was going to sit for a long time. Smokinbasser, sardines are a good idea I never thought of that..thnx
