What kind of gun should I get?

if you want a handgun which can reach out and touch someone, get a 5-7. it's not anywhere near your price range as they cost about a grand but its worth it. one can hit a human at 120-150 yards fairly easily, even easier if you have the gun supported but its really not necessary unless your jittery. closer targest are even easier. the only other gun i have shot which is as accurate are custom ($3k+) 1911's and my fav gun, HK Mark23 ($2200 bucks). Both of those guns I shot at much closer ranges (under 50 yards) although I can keep the rounds touching at 25 feet off hand (I wish I could do it at 25 yards but I haven't shot that much for a while now. I know the guns can do it, I'm just the limiting factor!)

BTW: the most fun gun I have is my Hi-point C9. Sure its 150 bucks and is not that accurate but its fun as hell, I always have it with me, and it goes bang every time! Cheap as hell, its bomb proof, and it works. My safe queens never really get as much time in the sun.

Like most folks have said .22 or 9mm is probably your best deal ammo wise.

I have a Ruger Blackhawk in .30 carbine that is super fun to shoot. More powerful than a .22 and louder but with less recoil than a .357.

I have found that my .30 Blackhawk actually shoots better so is more gratifying than the one I have in .45 colt/45 ACP.

Boxes of surplus .30 M1 are still sorta pricey but you can get cases of Wolf .30M1 from Sportsmans Guide fairly cheap from time to time and that's about all I shoot in mine.
