What kind of knife person are you?

I wont use anything that I know I cant easily replace (sprint runs, 10 year old BM's, rare knifes etc). As for everything else, it eventually finds its way into rotation.

I'm a user, but not an addict. I'm not a collector of anything but recognize I might buy a knife some day that just seems too nice to use. I haven't found one yet though. They all thank me for the attention.

Since getting the blade bug a few years back I have accumulated way more knives than practical for use but all purchased and intended for use. One of the first things I do now with a new knife is sharpen it (even if it is scary sharp at purchase) I found early in my knife days I would get a new knife that was intended for use and then would hesitate using it because I didn't want to lose that hair popping sharpness. Figured the only way to overcome this was to get good at sharpening so that I knew I could always get that sharpness back. Like many have posted, I try to buy the best quality knives I can afford. This has lead to a plethora of Busse's, my beautiful Horton, a few Randall's, a WH (a blade I think gets way to little love on these forums because you cannot stick it in a tree and use it as a ladder rung), and, as of yesterday, my first Strider. That said, there are a number in my collection at lower price points that I actually think are great blades. Love my ESEE's, think the CRKT M16 titanium in AUS-8 is a wonderful EDC for <$80 and ironically enough, have a S&W folder that was ~$25 in coated 440 that is a great little blade.

User for sure.

If I buy a knife whether its $100 or $1000 it will be used at work or for any cutting task required.

Im trying to stay with quality over quantity but the number just keeps rising...

I started out as a dumb kid breaking knives. So I went and bought a "nice" knife. Broke that too. So then I found Bladeforums looking for a good knife that would last me a lifetime. Ended up with a ton of knives, good, bad, fancy, plain, expensive and "value line". The last few years I have been trying to thin out my collection to only users. Then I go on a buying spree. Binge Purge Binge Purge. All users
I've spent as little as $10 on a user and as much as $250 since I became a "knifenut". So far I'm pretty happy with the knives I have right now. Still working on pairing down to just the absolute minimum edc rotation. But I'm on this forum everyday and I think because of that I feel the urge to buy more knives all of the time. But this is also the place I come to sell the knives I won't use. And generally I end up using that money to buy more knives that I may or may not end up actually liking.

Then about a week ago I started buying Daggers. Why? I have no idea. But I like them.
I may not use them now, but when the end times come I will be able to equip my entire extended family with all their cutlery needs! :D

I'm kinda glad this thread popped up again. After reading some of the other posts and agreeing with a lot that has been stated, I need to re-evaluate myself. I guess I'm not really that much of a "collector" as most (90%) of my knives were purchased for all intents and purposes...as users...BUT...they just don't get used very often considering how many I have. Now I don't have 350 knives LOL...but I most definitely have more than I need or will EVER need, for that matter.

I will carry all of my knives and if a cutting chore comes up, whatever knife I have in my pocket at the time will be brought to bear and will be "used." The only knives I have that were bought to actually keep in the box are a few Case slip joints. They're just to darn puuuuuuurty to scratch up, LOL. :p

I would like to also add, that there are some knives that I would like to have...but I KNOW, I would never use so there is no point in wasting the money.

1. A large Busse chopper.

I live in a large city so I don't have wide open mountain ranges or the great outdoors in my backyard. Hacking trees, baton firewood and practicing "bushcraft" is something that I rarely get a chance to do. A "chopper" for me is a waste of money. With that being said, I do have a BK2 and an RMD for those rare occasions, and a hatchet.

2. A Sebenza

Very nice knife. I can't disagree...however a $400 knife is something that would just sit my drawer as I would be afraid I'd scratch it.

You know, a "no-frills" Sebenza isn't really all that pretty a knife. A few scratches on it don't make a whole lot of difference. I wouldn't spend $400 on one either, but it's for other reasons. No need to derail the thread and get into that.

I suppose that I have more knives than what any person may practically ever need to own, but like everyone else here, I just like knives and I appreciate a good one. At present, I carry a RMK Fireman Special as my EDC, a RMK M16-7 S1F while in the field, and a Gerber A-F Combat Folder as a backup to everything. There are plenty different knives that I rotate through, but these three knives are my current regulars and suit my needs quite well. I'm also a big fan of the Boker A-F Harsey 5.5 as well as some workhorse KA-BARS that are never far from my reach.

I'm pretty strictly a user. If I'm not going to at least do SOME cutting with a blade, I'm probably not going to buy it. I'd use a 800 dollar knife just as much as I'd use a $40 knife. For me, if I can't use it, I can't justify purchasing it. No safe queens here!

Welcome to the forum, Jim. I wish I could EDC a 4" blade, but as it is, I'm stuck with a GTR Special.

There's a Randall forum here, in case you didn't know. You might enjoy poking around there.

i have more knives then i need, but in the last year i have started buying nicer knives so those nicer knives get all the use. eventually i am going to sell a lot of my cheaper knives so i just have nice stuff. but pretty much all my knives are users, price doesnt matter.

I'm a budget guy. The majority of my knives are 30$ or less, but quality. Lately i've started to buy used slipjoints. I won't spend an amount of money on a knife that i could buy a nice guitar with.

Well, a "nice" guitar can easily set you back several thousand. That leaves a lot of room for knives.:D

Many Thanks Samael! It's just the job that allows me to carry the Fireman Special; a tough little knife. Thanks for the heads up on the RMK forum! BTW, I like the GTR SPL too.

GTR (Gary T. Randall) is quite the character. If you haven't gotten to know him by now, it's probably too late, though. He tells me he'll be retiring "soon." (No date given, though.)

I mostly enjoy cheaper knifes, like the Rat-1, Spyderco Tenacious, Skyline, Buck 110, Delica...I get as much enjoyment out of using $25 Gerber type knifes than other guys would with $ knives.

Thats just me, I can see other people like finer knives. If a knife is too expensive I wouldn't even want to use it, or buy it in the first place so it wouldn't be much fun for me.
