What kind of knife would you use to cut aluminum cans?

My old man dips snuff. His usual spit can is a Dr Pepper can with the top split open. As you can guess, his pocket knifes take a lil wear and tear lol. What steel, hardness, and edge geometry would you guys recommend to survive this abuse long term? I was thinking of making or buying him a little knife as a present that he can use for this every day with minimal edge damage. Perhaps something really tough like 5160 with an obtuse angle?

A Ginsu knife from QVC is the ticket. On teevee they show them cutting tin cans all the time.

The little serrations rip and tear right through the aluminum! And when they get dull, just throw them away!

Comp cutter!

(I know there are vids around here somewhere of people taking the tops off 8 or 12 soda cans in one swipe :) )

Aluminum is not too difficult to cut, so a cheap knife will work fine. I agree with the above post about a sharpening stone, that and a knife with easy to sharpen steel will be great for him.

Tin snips aren't something most people wan't to carry in their pocket ;) .
You guys say the aluminum shouldn't affect even cheap knives much? His blades all look like hell. Maybe hes using them for other stuff I dont know about. I thought it was the was splitting coke can tops.

Here ya go...

Used one that I double stamped with my Makers Mark. Remarkably it just put some surface scratches on the end with no tip damage.
The Robar NP3 coating is awesome. It is one of the best I have used next to Hard Chrome.

What an odd way to put the guard on :applause:

Use one of those Chunky soup cans the whole top peels right off like a sardine can, just make sure you eat the soup before he spits in it :barf: :D
