Pure speculation on my part, I agree with different knives for different periods, but I also think that the origin of the business man would likely dictate the location the bodyguard was from as well. In other words if the business man was visiting out West but was from back East, and had a bodyquard with him, the knife would likely be different from the bodyguard for a business man that stayed in the West early on, during the growth and expansion of the West.
One from the East would likely have a dagger of some sort, even a push dagger, or a more ethnic in nature knife that was brought to America by emigrants like a lagioule, stilleto, or vendetta knife.
One that had been in the West for a long time would likely carry a gun, derringer, or a bowie of some sort.
I hope this makes some sort of sense, I know what I'm trying to say, not sure it's coming across right.
Anyway, just my guess.
