What Kind of Mushroom?

Hi Folks,

Just took the dog out for a walk today and came across these mushrooms growing on a log. They were bright orange and looked a bit like a clam shell. Any idea what they are?

When growing on hardwoods, yes, on softwood, NO.

Check around for references under the names I gave you. You shouldn't have any trouble getting information on those.

PAY VERY PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO WHAT THE WARNINGS WILL SAY ABOUT THIS MUSHROOM AND MUSHROOMS IN GENERAL.

Chicken of the Woods are one of my favorites.

I like to harvest only about the outer fifth then layer in a baking dish with scalloped potatoes onions olive oil and oregano and bake.:thumbup:

I'm not sure I know my tree species well enough to give it a go....better safe than sorry.
