I was wondering what kind of sharpening system you all use for the field. I cuurently use a lansky "dogbone ceramic" rangerbanded to my sheath...I also use my belt....How bout the rest of you??

I've never carried a dedicated sharpener on trips. When I go out the edges are in wonderful shape and to keep them that way I strop them on my pant leg and steel them on the back of another knife or any other flat piece of steel that's handy.

The lansky has a rounded edge for serrated blades...but also flattened sides for regular blades

Oh, I've got lots of IDEAS about field sharpening. But what I actually take is a ceramic rod -- about 4-1/2 inches long and 3/8 inches in diameter. Works fine for touchups.

If I ever get around to it, I'll make up version 4 of the Hoodoo Hone for lazy-boneses with a 6- to 9-inch long pad. Version 3 was 4 inches long and that's just too short.

I was just wondering about this myself. When i head out i bring my DMT diafold fine/extra fine. It generally only gets used on the hatchet because everything i bring is already sharp.

However, what about woodworking tools that i might bring if i were planning on staying in the wilderness for an extended period of time. say a saw, gouge, auger, draw knife, chisel. What might be the best sharpening tools for overall longevity, size, durability, and weight for these tasks.

Sputnick, I have used the diamond file on a Leatherman Wave for sharpening auger bits. It would probably work to some effect on your saw due to it's thinness. Other than that I carry a coarse/fine DMT.

Ditto on the DMT duofold. These things work like a champ, for me anyway.

I like to strop my convex blades at least a few passes after each use, time permitting. Usually works pretty good to keep the razor edge

EZE-lap pocket sharpener and Lansky "crock stick" multi-sharpener are what I carry.

+1 on the EZE Lap pocket stick. Also strips of 00 grade emery paper taped at the back of my K-Bar USMC sheath knife.

Case Stockman in the pocket takes care of the skinning, peeling and preparation stuff, the K-bar for a heavy duty camp knife, for tinder, kindling, tent pegs and the like.

I sharpen the carry knives in the shed before a bush trip, and the EZE lap and the emery paper takes care of the "field" maintenance.

And, before you ask, yes, I am a gentleman of the <ahem> older vintage.:)

I have a Lansky 'Dogbone' (mine looks like the Crock Stick pictured above) banded to the sheath of my current user rotation. If we're car camping, I'll take an old Sharpmaker.

I can't get anywhere sharpening freehand...

So on backpacking trips, I bring that small, red plastic "X" shaped ceramic stick holder from Gatco. Costs 5 bucks, and works great.
