Let's say I get some iron and want to make a steel like 1084, but without the Mn. I would like to add a small amount of Niobium for grain refinement. Is this possible to do in a homemade crucible?

I'm not sure about your specific recipe but check out "bloomers & buttons" sub-forum on Don Foggs Forum. There's several guys doing crucible wootz there.

Also, Primal Fires Forum, check out the sub-forum "tutorials room", pg.1, thread #14........"tutorial on making wootz crucible steel"

Enough info to tie your time & wallet up for at least the next couple years ;) :)

Yes. I am doing that for few years already. But... it is NOT easy, NOT cheap, NOT reliable. It is complete PITA.

It is Ok with me... as I am a "wootz nut".:D

1084 without Mn? will it be better than s5? why not make s5?

teh heh, why not make powder S5 with just a bit more carbon and something to make it air-harden, maybe a bit more chrome, and the niobium is a good idea...

come to think of lets put a whack of nickel in it... awww, I'm off topic sorry

Powder steel does not make any sense when talking about crucible steel. Is is completely different Kamasutra pose....
