what kind of tempering oven is the best ? i make small knives, nothing ever bigger than 12"x .25".i want to get into stainless more. d2 or ats34 or 440c. any feed back will be a great help!

Tempering is not the problem hardening is for the stainless steels. The ~ 400 F can be done in your kitchen stove. The higher ~ 1000 F temper isn't needed.

I have a toaster oven just for tempering. It warms up quick, has a timer and was $11 brand new at target!

I also have an oven thermometer inside to make sure the temp is accurate.

Are you looking for a TEMPERING oven or a HEAT TREAT oven?

I heat treat in an Evenheat kiln & initial temper in a toaster oven. This allows my kiln to cool down and then I do a second temper there at very controlled temps.

I use a Paragon for heat treat, and simply use a toaster oven for temper.

I have to add, some stainless steels (I use these days RN15X and high temp tempering is recommended for it if I want to go up 61-62 HRc, tempering it at 400 F would give me about 57 at max.) needs higher temper temperatures, lets say 1022 F. I have two electrical kilns. I use small one to harden, large one for temper. It would be very to temper in the same kiln I guess, cooling down the kiln fast will damage it.

thanks guys, im looking into getting a heat treat oven.so should i get a paragon or a evenheat or maybe somthing else.i do all my carbon knives in a propane forge and stovetop oven but i need some thing that i can do stainless heat treating.

I have the Evenheat with the Setpro controller, and love it, but if I were to replace it I would go for the Rampmaster control, it apears to be simpler to use. J.D.
