What kind of vehicle?

Good to see other Subaru fanatics, we're actually considering getting a Forester for our next car (the Impreza is limited in its off road capabilities and doesn't have towing abilities).

So then why am I always passing Subarus on mountain roads? :D

Joking, of course. Mostly.

That's because a lot of old ladies drive Subarus...
Joking... Mostly... :D

I think a bike would be hard to beat when the traffic stops because every one is trying to get out at the same time . Finally snagged my dream bicycle. and it is approching being set up to do what I want . Custom surly long haul trucker with racks trunk bag etc I have bucket panniers made and wire baskets for cargo . It will hold 2 more water bottle cages which if needed I have on ther bikes. As fat and old as I am I could make 50-60 miles a day some one in top shape could do a 100 miles a day easily

Do not have a picture handy and I still have to do a trans and engine swap once the 7.3 craps out or I get the 5.9 12v rebuild finished.

2001 Ford Excursion 12 V 5.9 Cummins ZF-6 proper lights and very mild lift and proper tires. Its uses no computer or electronics for basic function. Mechanical engine and manual trans ITs a F250- frame and suspension so it can handle hard use. Nothing in the diesel world is as durable and basic as the cummins mechanical P-pump Being mechanical and diesel it can run on any kind of oil so fuel would be far easier than new diesels or gasoline engines. But honestly if you are really talking end of the all society I will take a few horses any day. Maybe not as fast and can not go as long but grass and water may be far easier to find day in and out than fuel.

The Excursion makes sense for families etc but some sort of crew cab would work very well also. You have to consider that there would not be road upkeep or clearing of debris so something like a VW TDI might not workout too well in the long run.

Well I obviously don't care about gas mileage with this pushing 37s on my 4door JK...my slicer was along for the ride...haven't encountered much I can't get through...

Nice bike, Roy! One of my riding buddies just bought a Surly LHT to build up. Sweet.

I agree that a bicycle might be a very useful survival item. I have a decent road bike, but I really like the utility of a cyclocross bike. It's about as efficient as a road bike but can take quite a bit more abuse from off-pavement use....

I have a Bianchi Axis 'cross bike and love it. I've even used it on two 400+ mile trips around Lake Champlain, towing a Cruzer Cargo trailer full of my camping gear.

Stay sharp,

I prefer snow machine or boat if gas is still available. If there is a need to ‘get away’ a first priority in my view is stay away from where the crowds will head for, like off the road system. “Living off the land” means room to do so.

Yay for bicycles! But I'd still rather take my Subie through the Donner Pass. I guess it depends on the level of chaos.

I love my little Tacoma. 4 cyl gets a little over 20 mpg no matter what type of driving with boring consistency. 4wd, lightweight, and 32" all terrains make it more than capable enough for most off-road situations. Can carry a lot of stuff and makes for great camp vehicle.

No, I can't tow 10,000 pounds or do 0-60 in 5 seconds. However, I can load it down and go about anywhere I need to. A jack of all trades IMO.

Need a new car but it seems where we want to camp we're limited by clearance then wether the car is 4x or not. How are the subarus for clearance?

I have a grand cherokee with a 4.7 liter engine. Fast off the line, four wheel drive, tough as nails. It is getting a lift soon, and hopefully a winch bumper, too. Takes to water like something that takes to water reasonably well. It just goes right through on water crossings like they arent even there. Easy to work on and parts are cheap and plentiful. Cargo space is not the greatest, but it is just me and the lab. Plus I am putting a rack up top, too. I want to get a second ride that does not have a computer or fuel injection, too. Maybe an old CJ7 or pick up of some sort. Love the F100.

I agree about the forester, I have a 2010. I went and drove a 2014 last week and it will be my next purchase as soon as they get my color in. It is much smoother and gets 32mpg+ it also has x-drive for the rougher places. This is from our road trip to Ft. Bragg, Christmas to see daughter and S-I-L. Right now my son is driving it and it's covered in mud. Subaru's always look better durrty!

We also have a '99 GMC Sierra 4x4 with a 4.3L V6, but I prefer 'Old Blue' ;)
I think it's got around 125k on it.

The GMC just doesn't 'purr' like a 351 Ford :D

The Crosstrek has 3 more inches than the Impreza Sport, but for the best clearance you'd want the Forester... actually, I just looked it up, the Crosstrek, Forester, and Outback all have 8.7" of clearance. I'd say that's pretty good :D

I haven't sat in a 2014 yet, but I hear they are amazing, what color are you getting?

Gerberblades - Love the pic of your Silverado covered in mud! That's how ya know a truck is being used properly :D
