I was wondering if anyone could tell me what kind of wood this is.

I had a piece of striped maple that looked a lot like that. Maybe some others will have an opinion. Larry

I'm with Stacy. Looks like curly, tiger, fiddleback etc.. Some stain it with chromic acid which gives it that color. The longer you leave it on there before wiping it, the darker it gets. I think sitting it in the sun also helps darken it.

A lot of woods curl like that. From the color I might think it could be Redwood as well. Here is one I did not too long ago with California Redwood.

How'd you darken it, or does it just look like that? I have some and I really like that darker color.

Looks like an open grain wood to me with the pores as shown. It would not be maple then. Many, many woods have tiger striping. Is it stained or not?

I did notice the grains. It could be fake. I've seen people make the stripes with a highlighter and it looks pretty realistic, at least on the computer.

Thanks for the replys. I don't know what it is as I was given this set of scales. I used Danish oil (natural) on it. It was pretty light colored when I started and almost holographic. And no, I did not put any of the stripes on it. Ill let it sit for three or four days and then use satin finish Varathane. I might put more Danish oil on it as it was still soaking some up after 45 minutes.

That is both good looking wood and a very good looking knife.

The open poores make me think it is Mango.

Rookie25,

I didn't intentionally darken it. In fact, I think the finished color was closer to the unfinished block which you can see is a bit brighter and more reddish. The handle looks darker mostly from crappy photos but also from working the wood. A combination of sanding dust, oils from my hands and the finishing coats of TruOil may have changed the color some.
