I don't think its a laminate, I think it is just cut different than we are use to seeing. If you look at this picture of Ringed Gidgee you can see the similarities, but I am not a wood expert:o

they are solid and not laminated. i'll post some closeups of the scales when i can get some better pictures taken.

I will tell you what i know.....I like it....thats about all i can tell you
you're not the only person who likes it :D i wish i knew exactly what kind of wood it is. i was at a fundraiser this past weekend and a bunch of guys wanted to buy that knife from me. i could have sold half a dozen of them easily but with the same scales.

naaaaaaaaaaah, i dont think its goatwood :p :D. i have 2 scrap pieces left about 1" square. i epoxied them together to test how well the epoxy will hold. i might have to cut them apart and send a piece off to mark to check out better.

i forgot to mention that the grain looking down at the spine is at an angle if that makes a difference.

I will be interested to see what this wood is also. I really like the knife Richard!!

Ive seen brazilian rosewood with a figure and color similar to that.Nice.

i sent an email with a picture to scott phillips who has a tv show on pbs called american woodshop. he said it looks like paduk. mark at burlsource told me if the sawdust was bright orange which it was, then it is paduk. i never heard of paduk before but i really like the looks of it.

esav sent me this link which is interesting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Padauk

andy, post some pictures of the padauk board when you get a chance. i'll do some sawing on the scrap piece i have and take a picture of the sawdust if i can get a good picture of the color.
