What kinda Forge you using?

Im new to Knife making and made a small 1 qt soup can forge with plaster of paris and sand. It does its job although not so well. Im getting uneven heating and cannot tell until I sharpen the knife edge. I get harder to sharpen areas and wonder what all of you do to avoid this.

Currently, over 300+ knifemakers use one of these. They've been real popular with beginners, although at least 2 ABS mastersmiths have one as well as a dozen or so ABS Journeyman. The second best option for knifemaking would be to build your own.

Get a section of steel tubing/pipe sick it inside your forge and then sick your knife inside that to heat up. It's called a muffle, the idea is to nor to expose your knife directly to the flame, and even out the temps a bit. Although with a really small forge this may not work...
