What kinda knife combo should I pick?

I want to get together some blades for EDC for a SHTF situation. Now, this does not include any BOB, or survival kits, just a choice of knives that I should bring along.

What I've been thinking, is something like this:

A large, heavy use folder. (Spyderco Manix and the like)

A fully serrated 3 inch folder. (Salt, Delica)

A small pry-bar like fixed blade. (TOPS Wolf pup, 2.5 in)

Multi-tool. (Victorinxo, Leatherman.)

Should I change it around? Any advice?

If your carrying a FB ditch the manix. Personally I don't see the point in carrying so many but TEHO. :)

that sounds like a practical mix to me. Why such a small fixed blade, if you don't mind my asking?

Well, this would just before a basic EDC that would be switched around has needed. I live in a suburban environment, and as of such, I don't think anything more then a small sharpened wedge of metal would be needed, I don't know, though, which I'm posting this. :D

A good kukri with a good karda, and take a folding saw, its all I ever take, and most of the time I don't bother with the saw.

I think the manix is redundant.

If you want a small pry 2.5" then the manix is unnecessary.

if you had a large chopper then the manix could stay.

I would go with a 3-4 heavy FB like the F-1 or RD-4 and ditch the Manix.

It all depends on the amount of S.

Right now I am at work in an office 400 meters from home and I have one FK U2 and a LM Fuse in my pockets. I also have a FK WM1 and a SAK (the one with philips and magnifying glass) in my gadget box.
I also discovered that I had my FK F1 and a BAHCO folding saw in there as well since I was out driving yesterday.
That would take care of alot of S.

A decent LM tool is enough if you have a job where you normally work indoors.
If you go outside the "50-signs" or the city limits you should add something in the 4" blade range (a FK F1): I would trust my life on that knife, not only because it is a swedish design and made initially as a Airforce survival knife, but because it does not have any "combat-looking" features and the size is just right.

My combo that I feel would be sufficient for my SHTF needs is a FK F1, a BAHCO folding saw and a LM Fuse.
You could replace the F1 with an S1 and the LM tool with any tool of your choice. You might wonder why I dont have any axe. It is much safer to baton a piece of wood in pieces than axing it.

Well, SHTF when you least expect it, so are you talking just regular EDC? If so, you list looks okay.

The Manix would be a great primary folder and I also like the smaller folder with a fully serrated blade for really tough cutting chores. A SAK or Leatherman is a good addition. Not sure about a small, thick fixed blade. If you can swing it, I would recommend something in the size of the F1, but if you want a pry bar, pick up a mini pry bar.

As mentioned, a nice small folding saw (such as the BAHCO or Kershaw) would be a good addition to your main gear.

Kabar Camp Knife. Good flashlite and my SAK. That would suit me. If just one, SOG Navy Seal Knife. I still always have the SAK.

The Nessmuk combo worked for that guy, however the world has been more technified so the small folder he used needs to be replaced with a multitool.

A good multitool that you feel comfy with in your belt would be allowed in most places and even if not really, really allowed usually its okay anyway.

A 4" knife that does not have any "military looking" features will most likely pass everywhere if you are dressed for the occasion. Same as the multitool. You are not really, really allowed to bring the knife to the supermarket, but if dressed for hunting it might be OK.

A folding saw fits everywhere and works as well as an axe and is less dangerous to use and you can split wood with a knife and a piece of wood.

Regarding any extras, you can choose whatever knives you like. If you want a serrated belt and rope cutting knife, well, get one you like and carry it.

Someone, somewhere pointed out one important thing, lets say your primary knife is a F1 or a Ka-Bar or ...., dont forget to bring a similar/duplicate in your pack. If you drop your 4" somewhere you might need to make do with the 2" on the multitool for the duration, and remember McGyver is TV :)
Even if you dont drop your knife it is also good to have an extra, so you dont get dirt in your food.

I've been keeping my benchmade activator on my belt, and switched from my mini griptilian to a 520 Presidio recently. I'm liking this combination for every day use.

I often have to cut things in my work, and I also have to be sensitive of my customers. The small fixed blade is very good for introducing people to the fact that I'm packing, and they're ok with it because it's such a unique thing for for a guy to carry an ole skool belt knife which also happens to be small and cute.

The large folder, I am realizing as the 2008 products arrive, is very good for leverage and a sure grip. I've had to break down 150+ boxes in the past two days and a little knife would have made it a big chore but the big knife made it a breeze. It doesn't take up as much space as the capabilities it provides. A large good quality folder is a good value in terms of weight, space required to carry it and functionality.

In my man-purse/backpack, I have a swiss army knife and a low profile fixed blade about 8" overall, very light and concealable. It stays in the pack and will only get worn on me if some crazy situation arises.

For hiking around, a 6" blade at the least comes along, (Fallkniven in this case). Usually a large blade 10"+ takes that spot, though (a 12" Chitlange khukuri, or my forged 10" Japanese bowie).

If I were to only have 6 knives, (thank god there's no limit!) I would have the small fixed blade, large folder, swiss army knife or similar, stealth personal fixed blade, 6" survival knife, and a large blade of some kind or another.

That's my take!:)
