What knife am I looking for?

I would probably end up walking out of the store with some POS knife that just felt good to me.

At least it would be a knife that felt good to YOU, not what a stranger on an internet forum told you was good.

Preferences vary widely and often change with experience. Why don't you get a MORA, use it, and hang around here some to learn in more detail about pricier choices?

Becker is made by Camillus, which is basically out of busienss, so choices are chancy.

Fallkniven
Bark River Knife and Tool
Ranger

All offer a range of products and excellent warranties (and have forums elsewhere).

It is nice to handle a knife before you buy 'cause you DO want it to feel "right" in your hand.

Well I looked at the Ranger, Becker, and Mora (Ragweed Forge) websites. I would have to agree with what others are posting. The Mora's are inexpensive and people seem to like them. I'll order two different Mora's and see what I like/dislike about them. Even if they don't feel right in my hand I won't have blown a large chunk of change and I can start off small. Thanks for the advice everyone I really appreciate it!

You have made a very good decision. BTW Ragnar at Ragweed forge is a great guy with a stellar reputation.

For the price, you won't be disappointed:thumbup:

Thanks tarmix101. I just ordered a Triflex Craftsman (#780) and a #711-G along with some sharpening supplies. I'm not sure if the two knives I ordered are different enough from one another but I can always give one to my father as a camping knife.

I would not want to skin anything with a BK7, the blade is too wide for my liking.

My vote goes to the Mora. I've spent many hot summer evenings and cold fall nights skinning and filleting my dad and uncles games and fish when I was a kid. Only had a mora then, and it works great.

I have given away 6-7 Moras to friends who's idea of a good knife for the woods looked like something Chuck Norris would have used to cut an air craft carrier in half.

Good choice. I don't think you will be disappointed. I just recently got bit by the Mora bug myself and I wish now that it would have bitten me sooner.

Here is a Q from someone that lucky to know 10th of what most people on here know and thats the truth. The way i see it there are two main camps of thought. Carry a large knife Or carry a small knife. Both sides show why the knife they carry is the right knife. We all know that there is no magic knife that does it all even if thats the #1 Q people have. What is Wrong with having an old Hickory knive on you. My dad found one a long time ago. That was before i even knew what knive it was. He used it for everything then he left it laying around for a few years. I found it a short time ago, cleaned it up and put an edge on it. My mom needed something to cut some chicken bones with grabed that knife ( i left it on the table ) and with a small hammer she choped the bones in half. It took me less then a min to put the edge back on. Its light easy to keep sharp CHEAPPPPPPPP. I must admite i keep looking at all the nice knifes and keep telling my self i want one. Go back and use my Mora. Im going to buy a few more later on. I guess im more in the camp of a smaller knives. But i can see where a small knife would come short.
Talking about a Mora what do you guys think about the model C-223 and the C-173 If they are anything like the smaller Mora's they should be great knifes.. For a choper im going to try my hand with a spring out of a 1977 corvette. Maybe even with a BK9 if i find one cheap as people on here have alot of good things to say about it.
I gone backpacking a few times with a Mora #511 only and didnt feel one bit worried about it. Im easy on my knifes, Some of the wood i wanted i just broke off the dead tree. My mom always says that with enough muscle you dont need the brain. Its cause i sometimes break things that shouldnt get broken in the first place.

Nothing. Most will agree that if you find something that works for you...... great. Go with it. I just recently bought a OH knife and have been happy with it so far. Dulls faster that most of my blades, but it's so easy to put an edge on it, I don't mind.

As far as big knife vs small knife axe combo. Thats a can or worms and a beer:rolleyes: Again, I have found that a axe, 4" knife combo is best for me. Not the best way for everyone, and certainly not the best in all environments.

Half the fun is doing your own research.

Naaaah. It's MUCH worse than that. We can't even get an agreement on what a "large knife" is. :D

I mean, is a knife with a 4-5" blade that's twice as thick as a MORA "large" or "small"? Folks were asking if a Bark River Golok with an 11" x .20" blade was big enough to be a chopper, while others describe a 7" blade as a "real chopper."

What we have are differences of opinion. Some of those differences are just matters of taste. Others are matters of required function or potential.

A guy whose easy on his knives, like you, me, and many others, may be driven towards one set of answers.

A guy who routinely uses the knife instead of an axe or saw ends up in a different direction.

Worry about how crisis, cold, or injury might make you clumsy or impatient and you might want to upgrade the ability of the knife to withstand stress. (A tribute to the God Murphy.)

It's all good when informed consideration goes into the choice(s).

Very good post Thomas:thumbup:

Until recently I never new what abuse people put their knives through, but watching Bear bang away on the spine of his knife with a rock and "sharpen" it with a hand full of gravel. And what about the video that was posted on here a few weeks ago with the guy battoning his buck with the poll of a hatchet, until the buck broke, I honestly had no idea what people expected of there knives. Makes me understand why some people want a 1/4" piece of the toughest steel they can find ground into a knife shape. ;) Chris
