This is another help me find a knife thread. I'm looking for a folder in the 3 inch range (2.9-3.4) with a decent steel (vg-10, 154, D2, s30v, etc) with a titanium handle and pocket clip. locking mechanism should not be a lockback. As I write this I'm thinking of a Sebenza, but I'd like to keep it under $200. Maybe even $150. Any suggestions?

Perhaps a Benchmade 31 Balisong. Titanium handles, 3" 440C blade (trust me, BMs and MTs 440C steels are really good) and a slim but sturdy pocket clip - $100 - $120

You can't go wrong with a Sebenza though.

And if I may ask, whats wrong with a lockback?

I know they're pricey but you just can't beat a Sebbie. I've got two regular small Sebbies and both were obtained through combination buy/trade deals. I don't mind giving up several to get one if it's worth it and a Sebbie certainly is worth it. Just a suggestion.

Hmmm....try buying a decent second hand Sebenza from the For Sale forums. You may find one under $250, which would be a little over budget but worth it. If you are thinking about one already then you'll only yearn for it if you buy something else.

Buck Mayo's are superb at under $200.

The Spyderco Ti Salsa is also well worth a look at under $100 - well made and slices like a demon.

I second the Buck Mayo! I've had mine for a week now and have carried it every day since. I can't say I like it better than my small Sebenza Classic but it is a great knife. I like the Sebenza's drop point blade profile better and it's better made but it's also a lot more expensive.

Thanks folks! great suggestions so far.

I'll look at BM w/ Titanium handles
I'll rethink going for the Sebbie
Ti salsa looks good
The Buck Mayo definitely looks good
Boy, made2cut, that Dominator looks sweet!

J-man, the only thing I have against lockbacks is that I find them to be the most difficult for me to close quickly. Just poor technique I think.

I just got to handle a Buck/Mayo for the first time yesterday and I would definitely put that at the top of the list (it's currently at the top of mine). I think it fits all of your requirements perfectly and there have been a lot selling in the exchange forums for a lot less than $200.

If your gonna spend $200, then you might as well go for the Sebbie. Look at it this way, you'll probaly get one eventually, so why spend money now if it's not what you really want (this is how I convinced myself to get one). BUT, if you're hell bent on staying under $200, then get the Buck/Mayo.

Get a large Sebenza and you won't need another folder. Or even want one for that matter.:) ;) :p

You guys MUST realize the Sebenza isn't everyone's favorite.
You could get two damn good Spyderco's or CRKTs or Benchmades, or Kershaws or others..... for that price.

My take on Sebenzas:
They are, of course excellent knives, but I think others have better ergonomics, I also don't care for the chalky texture of the bead blasted titanium handles. To each his or her own.....
Personally, I prefer my MOD Trident over the Sebenza. Superior ergonomics. Microtechs are always worth looking at.
Not only that, I am one of those folks who is hesitant to use such an expensive knife (even though I have)
IF you do want to spend that kind of cash, I suggest looking at Buck/Mayo, it is MUCH lighter.
If you want a REALLY tough folder, look at the Buck Strider and/or miniStrider.

Hey, Jman.
I also don't particularly like lockbacks because you can't do the one handed closing thing.

....keep saving til the Sebbie is affordable....I bought both a large and small Stars and Stripes at Blade 2002 in Atl. and have never been sorry for a second!!

Definitely check out the Buck/Mayo or wait until the Camillus Cuda Dominator comes out, that is one I want to handle in person...

Here's one I haven't recommended in a long time:
Sog Vision.
Very nice Tanto point. Excellent Blade geometry.
It's the only knife I could ever get through those big chocolate easter bunnies without shattering.

i second the mod trident
great ergonomics
feels just right in your hands

the mod ATFK is basically (imo) a trident handle and a new blade
you might want to consider that too

Thanks Guys. Great Recommendations! The "Get'm both" Philosophy will not work for me in thi$ ca$e, so I'll have to make a tough choice. Sebbie, Buck/mayo, BM940Ti, and Mod trident all look like good choices.
