What knife do you carry backpacking?

The same ones I carry every day, a Leatherman for utility work in a horizontal sheath on my gun belt at about 11 o'clock. A Ka-Bar TDI in a horizontal sheath on my gun belt about about 10 o'clock, orientated for support hand - considered by backup fighting knife or defense during gun grab. And my main fighting knife, a 599 Fox Karambit with clip deployed with 2 motions using Emerson wave in my strong side front pocket.

My current job (chimp research) has me hiking between 5-15 miles every day though I return to a permanent camp every night. I carry an endura wave for food prep and general utility and a panga (machete) for bushwhacking. I also have a SAK that I always keep in my pack.

I think a large knife is useful for going off trail. I use mine back at our permanent camp for preparing firewood and think it would be useful in any camp setting.

Dang Chimps are crazy! They eat body parts!

The custom Fällkniven F2k in my avatar and a Leatherman Charge.
The custom has got a new handle in Sambar Stag and Nickelsilver, instead of Thermorun rubber.

Here shown with birchcup, coffeebag and coffeecan.

The hunting & fishing bag is new for this year, as the old synthetic one was totally worn-out, after more than ten years of service.

It's great for any day outdoors.

The Ontario RAT-1 is my go-to if it's a one day trip. If I know it'll be rough the Ka-Bar comes with.

My preference is this:

I find I don't need anything more except maybe a fillet knife if I plan to do some fishing. Most of my outdoorsy cutting chores are food prep and a little whittling for cooking sticks, pegs and whatnot. I don't need a knife to build a fire. A SAK or multitool can be handy for unexpected gear repair but if you make sure everything is in good working order before your trip, you might save yourself some trouble before it starts...

Nice combo. Most of us could have any number of variations. I take whatever makes sense for the environment, length of stay and weight considerations. I try to keep it simple and the weight low.

The question of what knife suggests only carrying one...I always have a Swisschamp and a small fixed blade in the pack already when just going around town.
Plus whatever pocket knives I'm carrying...

People always seem to get so hung up over weight. If you're climbing mountains all day, then fine, I get it.
If not, then the water I carry just going to the mall weighs more than most knives I'd be carrying, and which means that as the day (or days) progresses, the pack gets lighter. By the time the weight would be bugging me, it weighs less. :)

I have more annoyance with the pack keeping heat in and making my back sweaty than any weight concerns.

As for what extra knife I'll throw in the pack when going "outdoorsing", the Junglas fits in a pack really nice.
For a lighter weight thing, the Cold Steel XL G-10 Espada weighs under a pound and works fine for trail clearing.

Or sometimes both, and a machete...I like knives.

Most of the time I carry an older Benchmade Panther with zytel handle. It's light and with a 3.6 inch blade it's big enough for most tasks.

I've also been known to carry a Mora 2000 which is larger but quite light too.

Nice choice, and even better photo! Where is it?

For me, at work its a Leatherman Juice S2, when hiking Fallkniven F1 & SAK Super Tinker, and for camping a GB Wildlife Hatchet, one of Fallkniven F1/S1/Idun for my fixed blade, a puukko for food prep and a Leatherman Wave.

On my small pack stays strapped:

A Svord Peasant in blaze orange, all the knife you need really

A multi tool

And a large SAK

In my back pack stays a Mora in the med kit (try to keep it clean) and a Condor Sapien as the 1st knife I grab (this Is a new addition does all I ask of it, just like the svord) oh and there's a Vic huntsman In a front pocket

Oh yea and there's a douk douk in a fishing kit I built up from a camera case as well as a broken trash blade for cutting up bait. I carry too much crap really but I like for the camera case fishing kit to be all I need to slip in a pocket and wander off or something like that.

I've carried a monster pack upwards of 50 pounds for almost 20 miles and learned that wasn't much fun. Since I've pared it back under 30 pounds and find a mora and SAK are really all I need. Have a (light) GSO 3.5 on pre-order that will undoubtedly be kicking the mora out for at least a little while, not because I expect it to be significantly better, but for the whole pride of ownership thing.
