What knife do you like to dress game with?

This is my favorite. Its shape is, to me, close to perfect for dressing and skinning. It's ATS34 steel. Remington put these out maybe 20 years ago. This one has worked great on Deer, Caribou, Elk and Antelope.

i have that same knife except it has the gut hook on it.. its a PIA to sharpen though:mad:.. FWIW, i abused mine so i may have to re profile the edge.

congrats to your son, hitting a deer on the ground with a bow is a feat in itself much less the old school way with homemade arrows:thumbup: now thats hunting!! :D

I have used a Spyderco Bill Moran Featherweight (FB01) with an upswept point. The first year it was stock, then I decided to have Tom Krein do a Full Convex grind on it and I have used it for the past two years. This year I will be using a Spyderco Bill Moran Drop Point (FB02). I have not decided if I'm going to use my Krein'd version or the factory version. :)

or a stock one that is NIB.

i could be wrong but that deer seems to be pretty dang old. the long snout and the amount of grey on him makes me think he is around 6-8yrs old.. again i could be wrong.

It sort of resembles an anteater with antlers.

Thanks much - I'll pass that along to him. :D He did get the ideal deer though - it was blind in one eye (the one closest to my son) and gave him a nice broadside shot opportunity at 15 yards or so. Can't ask for a much better setup.

I really like some of the Mike Stewart era Marble's knives, made out of 52-100B. Holds a great edge. My favorites are the 3 to the right, 2 Trailcrafts and a Fieldcraft. But knives are kinda like women, use what makes you feel good. :D

DennisStickland, who made your custim 06? I do not recognize the markings, and what kind of wood is the handle? Thanks. John

I use Dozier and Crotts for my hunting knives.. I used the Crotts model one on 6 deer and the edge was still sharp.. I touched it up with a strop when I got home and I swear it was sharper then when Dan sent it to me.. I found that the Orange G10 was great for finding the knife once I set it down to work on the anal cavity.. You don't need much to field dress most critters.. I shot a brown bear once and the guide pulled out a little case folder and a sharpening stone and went to work.. he skinned the whole bear in 4 hours with that tiny little folder.. I shot the bear before I got the knife addiction, and I wish I would have had a Dozier then.. I am going to be carrying a Dozier K19 this year and looking forward to slaying some whitetails with it..
I leave an Izula in my bow hunting pack all the time.. I sometimes blast off work early and have been known to not have my Dozier with me. The Izula works fine..

That is one huge bear!

john larsen the fellows name is Wentijec or something close. have had several of his knives since the 80s. i always liked 06 since it would do 3 deer & then still shave. the guy is from granger tex. have'nt seen him for a while he usually sold these for 80$ found his brochure Jimmy Wentrcek box 518 granger tx.76530. do'nt remember the wood had this knife 17 yrs. i like 06 since it has 1.5 % carbon. this is my 1st choice after all these years. dennis. john are you related to the knife writer?

When I go hunting I use a knife that is very strong, has lots of belly/curvature, a handle with great grip/ergonomics, won't slip when getting wet (very important) and has great edge retention. When you start dressing a deer you will not want to stop to sharpen your knife. Also with enough tensile strength to cut through breast bone and other joints. There are a number of knives on the market that can do this. I use the Buck ErgoHunter Pro in s30v, comes with a great gut hook, a terrific sheath, lifetime warranty and is made here in the USA. Go put one in your hand and you will see what I mean. It is a tool designed for this job. Here is a picture and I recommend the fixed blade version..

Dennis, Thanks for your information, looks like you got a winner in that knife, and I certainly like the looks of it. As to your question, quilty as charged. Thanks. John

That fine knife Dennis has was made by Jim Wintrcek ("Wintercheck") from here in the Austin, Texas area (Granger, Texas). He sets up at the monthly gun show here and always has a fine selection of great knives! I've owned several of his, and have a 3" one of ATS-34 steel right now. The handle wood on mine is mesquite, and is probably so on Dennis' knife as well...tough stuff!

John, if you're interested in Mr. Wintrcek's knives, here's his contact info:
