What knife do you use to open your packages with?

I basically use whatever I have handy. Usually it is my Mini-Manix in my pocket or my Jester on my keyring.

Does anyone have a dedicated knife for this purpose?

Does anyone have a dedicated knife for the type of package you are trying to open (i.e. box, clam pack)?

I was just curious as to what knife everyone else uses to open their packages, especially those with one or more new knives in them. :D

For me too its which ever is on me, which is my manix. I dont have a dedicated knife. At work when i had to open boxes i used the serrated blade on my Leatherman.

I only get packages sent to my PO Box, and try not to ruin my good folders from the glue on the packages, tape etc, so I use either my truck Leatherman Juice blade or my truck Leatherman Wave blade. On the rare occassion I get something at home, I use my Buck Cadet.

With what comes handy. Even teeth and claws ))
One day I saw in a small shop chinese ripoff of CS Urban Pal (and it was pretty decent copy), costing ~$3,5. I've bought it after curiousity, now I use it for opening juice or other soft packs. Keep it in the kitchen.
Small blade won't pierce packs through.

I usually use my benchmade mini pika but recently i've been looking for a hawk bill knife for this task.

Actually my EDC, because that's the knife that is always with me. BTW it's a Camillus Cuda Quick-Action, or rarely a Ka-Bar Mule.

Edited to ad: I really don't feel the need to carry around more than one knife for different tasks in a city. Te handy Leatherman Micra is always on my keyring, but I can't remember, when was the last time I was forced to use it's tiny knifeblade.

At home - if paper/cardboard based it's my at home EDC - Kershaw/Ken Onion Black "boron" Leek (linked).

For those nasty blister packs I prefer to use scissors for better and safer control - at home it would be any of the pairs of scissors I have around - mostly a small Fiskars, or the kitchen "shears".

Away from home it used to be mostly my EDC SAK -
please see this monster thread - EDC - What's in Your Pocket(s)?? the opening post shows my EDC for over 13 years.

But for now it's this on trial $7 Edc (linked)

For awkward packages like blister packs I try to be patient and not open them as I'm walking away from the shop - but wait until I'm settled back in my car - and calmed down - then I use my EDC knife and open the blister pack - BUT with care........

Usually whatever is on me, I just opened a box from Botach with my spydie salsa plain edge and it made short work of it :D
cheers,

Mainly whichever of the following three is closest:

1) Queen D2 Large Congress
2) Spyderco Centofante IV
3) Victorinox Pruner (cheap line, exposed brass rivets and textured red scales, and a lovely single hawksbill blade).

I have also started using a Byrd Robin some, and am very impressed with the edge holding so far.

After Armageddon, the only thing that will survive unscathed is clam shell packaging

I carry different knives from day to day, usually a multi-tool, plus a single-blade folder or slipjoint, often both. I've found I prefer sheepsfoot blades for packages, either on my slippie (if it has one) or Leatherman (the serrated blade on my Charge, f'rinstance).

I just find a straight edge and blunt tip easiest to control. For slitting tape, I put my forefinger over the back of the tip, so that the tip can only cut ~1/16" deep; plenty enough to cut the tape, while not cutting the contents. For cardboard, I do the same, but with maybe 1/4" of tip. For (gack) clam-packs, the straight edge is less likely to pop out of the cut than a curved edge.

If I don't have a sheeps handy, then I just use whatever I've got, of course!

I think THE best knife for opening clam packs is the Spyderco Cricket. That little recurve whips right through those things. It's almost a hawkbill at the tip.

clamshells are a pain. I had to open 3 in a row, and with my sak tinker, I was afraid I was going to lose a finger, I had to push so hard. My gf got scissors. I would otherwise use my endura (SE)

I rotate my EDC weekly, so to answer your question, today I used my Delica S.E. GIN2 steel to open a few packages at work and later, the mail at home.
Ask me again next week. :)

I use whatever is onme, and for opening packages, it is more than likely going to be my Spyderco Calypso, Jr. doing the job.

I'm with DGG. I have all my stuff delivered to the office, where I keep a Stanley 10-399 box cutter in my desk.

Usually the sheepsfoot in my stockman which is my main utility blade, always handy and the straight edge is easy to touch up and keep sharp.

Most of the packages I receive ARE knives. Therefore I just rattle and shake the package until the point shoves through... :D ;)

Just kidding. I don't have a specific knife I use, just whatever I happen to be EDCing from my normal EDC carry collection.
