What knife features for Wilderness Survival?

A kukri with a 13-15" blade 23-29oz, a good bushcraft knife, and a good saw.

From experience so far with Hunting/Camping, the all around knife for me would be a fixed blade with no greater than 5" blade / Full Tang - 1/4" thick that could be used to baton/pry/make a spear/ skin game /defend yourself potentially from critters..

It would need to be Semi Stainless, Easy to sharpen, and maintain an edge / Mega tough rubber like handles with a lanyard hole.

If I could have 2 ,I'd throw in a folder / Frame lock or Compression lock w/no greater than 3.5 inch blade for light work, preferrably a G10 Scale on the handles for extra grip.

If I could have 3, I would also have a Small Hatchet / hickory handles with a belt sheath.

Myakka,

Doesn't this describe your Skookum Bush Tool? Thanks to your review
of the knife, I have one on order.

Lester

It should its Mors description almost word for word. (Bush Craft by Mors Kochanski, pages 109-111)

Without naming any knives.....
What features do you look for in a knife, or an axe, etc....for Wilderness Survival?

For example...opening a letter is probably not one of them!!! :D

General cutting chores
Personal grooming
Food prep
Cleaning small game
Repairs to clothing, shoes and gear
Fire making
Shelter building
Self defense

Weight is important. If it is too heavy to haul, it won't be there when you need it. If you have a cabin or vehicle to outfit, then it's a whole other ball game.

Cleaning a small ani-mal isn't much different than opening a letter-- zip 'em open and down the hatch

I love the mouse eating scenes in "Never Cry Wolf" with Edward Dryfus. If you haven't read any of Farley Mowat's books on the Arctic, you're missing something--- he wrote "Never Cry Wolf."

I thought everyone here knew the words of the master. Everyone knows I cant write. :D

And BTW MMC welcome to the Wilderness Survival Forums, I see your new around here.

7-9 inches. Indestructable under almost any abuse. Tip heavy wide blade for chopping. Nice choil for choking up. Tough steel, easy to sharpen but flexible and holds an edge.

Good ergonomic grip for prolonged use without pain or fatigue. Full tang, differentially heat treated. Lifetime warranty.

Thats it thats all, trust your life to it.

For me it boils down to one word "simplicity". Uncomplicated blade design/grind and a comfortable handle. Size is a personal choice. For me I like in the 6 to 8 inch blade range.
