What knife for Mother In Law?

Maybe something like this?

Bear and son make some traditional knives in abalone, mother of pearl and other unique handles, many with Damascus blades

Since you mention you didn't want simple plastic on a SAK have you considered a custom? There are a few guys here who build customs, cerakote the scales/tools (blades) and you can pick of the exact combo of tools you want, even a pocket clip.

First of all thanks everybody for the help and all the laughs.
"Reverse OTF", wth? :D

Just to be clear my mother in law is super nice and can't hurt a fly. Seriously. I dare to say she's a better mother in law than my wife's mother in law.
Still I like the fun poking and think of it directed at all the mean mother in laws out there. It sure seems there are truckloads of them.

Now the important part. The knife. I will show all the suggestions to my better half. So far her worse half likes the dragon fly and the sak secretary. The secretaries blank metal scales are an invitation for some custom work. Either professional engraving or I let my daughter electro etch some hearts into it. No way grandma wouldn't carry it then. :)
I also like mother of pearl for the word play.

Thanks again and I will keep you updated once there is something new.

My first thought was your basic Spyderco Native or Delica. Some others that you might take a look at are: the Fallkniven folders (you pick but they are very classy) and the folders that Santa Fe Stoneworks add handles to such knives as the Spyderco Delica. These are really nice. There is a knife dealer (NG) in VA that sells them, but they aren't a BF member.

Victorinox swiss army knives always work and I would choose something like a soldier in alox. They also do not raise many eye browls when you get it out to cut something.

If your not set on spending a lot of money, I got my mom a Case small Toothpick in purple bone.

Case makes some wonderful knives in beautiful colors. blue, red, purple, green, mother of pearl, turquoise, and much more.
You can pick the Toothpick, mini copperlock, mini trapper, peanut, copperhead, just look online at any large case dealer and pick one.

The steel isn't anything special, but if she's a non knife person the looks are much more important than the performance.

Busse AK 47 w/ deep pocket carry clip

Cold Steel Extra Large G10 Espada w/ pink scales

If you want to go Swiss, the Wenger 16999 will have every sandwich constructing tool imaginable, and multiple knives to she doesn't have to use the same one for peanut butter and mayonaise

If she's getting older, you might look into one of those Cane swords

Why don't you just get her a gun?

One word.... kitchen knives.

A little Spyderco might work. Ladies I buy blades for don't care much for nail nick openers. Reeks havoc on their manicure.

The boker magnum lady something comes to mind, bht i haven't handles it so can't vouch for quality. Should be enough for a m-i-l though

Buck 501 Squire comes to mind for something like this. Got one for my wife and she loves the wood and nickel look.

If she "doesn't like knives too much," then why would you get her one?
Get her something she actually likes, that way she won't STAB you with her new knife!
