What knife has (pleasantly) surprised you?

Pleasant surprise: Case Seahorse
Was my first traditional knife and I had low expectations but the angle of the blade and the curvy handle really hit me. And the bolsters were so shiny . The only reason I don't edc it anymore is because i got a tribal spear (well...two :D)

Unpleasant surprise: Case Swayback Jack
Was my third case knife (after the seahorse and tribal spear). When I opened the box and slid the knife out, I did not feel any internal resonance. It could be because of my large hands, or the fact that I dont generally like multiple layers, or that I just played with the Tribal Spear. I figure it will make a nice gift to someone though, so I am holding on to it.

Undoubtedly the Queen Cutlery Muskrat. Bought on a whim but without much expectation, I didn't really see the point of 2 clip blades...BUT this was single spring and this converted me.Not only this, but the finish is outstanding on it_I've had knives from Queen that have been borderline acceptable-but this is comprehensively well-made and easy in the pocket:thumbup: even came sharp:D

The GEC EZ-Open runs it a close second as I found the 2 blade 25 to be too stubby and thick, not this version!

Christmas is coming up. Do you want my address? :D ;)

I was pleasantly surprised by the Mora 510. It seemed so light and insubstantial in my hand, and that cheesey, red plastic handle just screamed "toy." But with actual use I've come to respect the quality of it and to enjoy using it. I will often reach right past my "nice" knives to grab the 510 on the way out to the woods.

Un pleasant surprise (required to explain the pleasant one);
Stockmans. They seem to be the 'standard' traditional knife, the standard slipjoint... everyone has on, or has had one, they are infinately available and verry recognizable to non knife people even.... guys thyat use them love them, and even those that don't love them, have used and liked them... an all around liked knife.

I am verry close to hating them.... but not by choice, just as an outcome; I really wanted one.

I thought having one would be good, and I could realy see the use of those three blades. I have had several and just can't get it... uncomfortable to hold and use, blades never aranged in a logical manner, either too big or too small... It just don't work for me. Even different frames like the sowbellie.

Now, the pleasant surprise; The Congress.
I had figured, "its just another stockman in a curved frame. I won't be able to use that."
Boy was I wrong. good blade choices, and arangment, comfortable to hold and use... and I do use it a lot!

Another big surprise came while carrying that congress; It has a sheepsfoot blade on it as the secondary main blade(the pile side big blade). See, I have always heard folks rave about how nice a sheepsfoot or wharnie blade is to use... And never could 'get it' I aways found it useless for anything i tried to do with one. I was considering modifying that blade to a slightly shorter drop point, and am glad now i didn't.... I never found time to do it... And suddenly a few weeks later found myself useing that blade, and quite perfectly for the task. Then the more i thought ablut it, I had been using it quite a lot recently... So, for a while I consciously tried that blade first for every task... It was surprising how many it did well, did just as good as the others, and even did better.

(I still can't find a stockman that works for me though... lol)

Who'd have thought? I would've.

The knife I EDC absolutely the MOST, is a Case TB5339SS stag sowbelly. (I'll see if I can post a pic tomorrow, when the light is better.)

Like that Sowbelly :)

I was very anxious about the arrival of a Queen/Dan Burke Daddy barlow

D2 and orange sawn bone - sounds a win on paper right?

Loved it when I got it - bu tthe edge was only OK

I just put a convex on it.

I don't care who knows! I own the best production folding knife in the world now :D:D

I hate to post this one again as it seems I do so much, but it's this large Marbles Stockman 4 1/4" size. I actually I almost sold this knife at one time which is nightmarish since I has become one of my favorites! I really like smaller knives but this baby carries easy for it's size and has wonderfully thin 1095 blades. This stockman cuts as pretty as it looks!

This is a great idea for a thread Coyote!
For almost a year now I have really taken a shine to Queen's D-2 steel. Just before the `09 forum knife arrived I got hooked on the #40 Gunstock pattern of theirs. I have no idea how I over looked this steel for so long. Then the forum Barlow showed up! Now I'm torn between the 2. I like the clip blade shape on the Gunstock & the pen is very useful. But the warncliffe & clip is a deadly combo.
Also in the mix I have to add this Camillus peanut. This little baby does everything I ask a knife on a daily basis to do. And some things a larger knife can't. So it now lives in my watch pocket. I'm blaming it all on Jackknife!:D
