In the TV series Outlander, Black Jack Randall has a knife which has a Bowie type blade shape, yet looks more like a reground saber. Does anyone know more details such as who made the one in the series, , whether there were such type knives in mid 1700's, etc?

Is this the knife you're referring to? Apologies for image quality; captured from standard def digital recording and the scene was dark, in more ways than one.

I thought the show did a good job of period correct costumes and such, and am interested in Bowies and their history. I was not aware of bowie type knives in the 1700's.
And usually, some great smith makes the knives for films. This smith may be British.

It's set in the highlands of Scotland in the few years leading up to the Battle of Colloden in 1746 at the climax of the Jacobite rebellion against the English. At that time, a bowie would be very historically inaccurate. Especially for a serving officer of the English army. A sword yes, some sort of dagger, maybe.

But either way, Black Jack is one sick puppy!!!!

Nope. Thank goodness I know someone with a Verizon FIOS account so I can use their login and watch the various HBO, Starz and Showtime programs.

Had actually not really looked closely at Randall's knife until I read the question here. I've been watching the highlanders' knives, though, and Jamie spinning his dirk in the palm of his hand here struck me as both funny and dangerous.
