What knife (knives) put you outside your comfort zone the most?

I mostly make culinary knives and I agree that tall distal tapered blades can take some real concentration and finesse.

If I had to call out my blade design area, daggers are the ones that give me fits. Getting a consistant bookmatch with a even taper usually involves some foul language getting them right.

I think I'll have to add a dagger to my to-do list, simply because I haven't made a good one yet.

I haven't made a folder yet. I hear those things can be a bastard.

But so far, pretty much any full flat chef knife. Even with a jig, anything .095 ish or less in thickness with a distal taper and over 60 RHC will warp and bow to one side until you can grind the other side and evens itself.

Ironically, it was my earliest projects that pushed me the farthest, probably because I had not established what my comfort zone was, and I was MUCH more experimental then.

As I look back on things like the Leaf Knife and the Caduceus Knife, I find myself wanting to try my hand at those projects again (as impractical as they both were) to see what I might be capable of today on similary off the wall designs.

Those are crazy awesome. I am currently tipping my hat in your direction good sir!

Hidden tang kitchen knives and folders for me. Not so much folders anymore though.

Oddly enough, I've never had a problem with grinding daggers.

I've been working on a spear, all the problems daggers give, plus a socket to really screw things up....
Third time's a charm, they say... or I hope so, the first two tries are scrap.
