What knife should I get my boyfriend for Christmas?

I know I always feel like a kid when I have throwing knives on hand. So fun and a lost skill. I'm sure he will appreciate whichever way you go.

Go to Blade HQ and search for eGift Cards. Get him one of those and let him choose the knife. ;)

This is the best option. You could get a gift card from Bass Pro, Cabelas, etc. and let him make a trip to the place and fondle all the knives he is interested in.

There are a lot of great knives out there. Fixed blade Esee (3 or 4), Folder Spyderco (delica or endura) can not go wrong.

I wish I could post a picture of what he has, but he's in Oregon for a year and can only visit once a month. I could try to get him to send me a picture of what he has or try to get a list of the brand names that he has.

You don't want to tip him off and that most definitely would.

This is probably your best bet. I know I would be happy to get a gift card from BladeHQ.

I am sure he would appreciate whatever you buy, but we can be pretty picky about what we like. A gift certificate to a good knife store might work best in the end.
BF has many fine knife store members

$150 dollars will go a lot further from different stores. The cabelas near me is ridiculously over priced. Like others have suggested, getting a gift card from one of our supporting dealers like bladehq or knifecenter is a great idea. If he knows what he likes there is no doubt he could find something there.

I kind of like the idea of an esee 3 or 4. You could throw in an inexpensive folder like a Dozier folding hunter, Ontario rat, esee avispa, or utilitac II and still be under budget.

Here's the esee 3 I carry often (knife on the left).

If you buy it he'll love it but having said that.
It's almost impossible to buy a knife for some one else and get the right one.
Get the gift certificate, you can't go wrong that way.

A gift card to blade hq does sound good. Who knows maybe the knife he's really wanted is on sale. Or he can put on extra if wanted. O the possibilities with a blade hq for 140.

I am going to assume, based on your budget and other things you've said that you are not twelve, and your boyfriend is mature enough to recognize quality things. If he REALLY likes throwing knives into things, a set of real throwing knives can be bought for under thirty bucks. AG Russell has a set of 3 that looks bada$$ for $25. Add a book on how to throw them for $8. BladeHQ has a set of 6 (Smith and Wesson!) for under $30. Then maybe he'll quit throwing his nice knives into things. If you still want to spend the other hundred on a knife, I'd look at a Benchmade Bugout or Mini Griptilian, or a Spyderco Native or Delica. Those four all come with plastic handles, and don't look like hundred dollar knives at first. But they CUT and the value becomes apparent as you use and own them. They are great everyday pocket knives. If you'd like to try picking out a traditional pocket knife, look at the Rough Rider line. I just bought one and am amazed at what I got for under $15. (Mine was a Rams Horn Canoe, if you want to look up a picture.)

If you want to take a real leap, Benchmade will do a custom Mini-Grip. Take a look at their website. You can have some fun designing it, even have a message etched on it. Then he'll have to love it. Act fast to get it by Christmas, though.

If you don't want to spend your whole budget, Kershaw makes plenty of appealing modern pocket knives (that means that they have a pocket clip) for almost any budget. You won't go far wrong with any of them. BTW, IMO, 3 to 3.25" blades is the sweet spot for an everyday pocket knife with a clip. Other folks may not agree.

Go ahead and get him a gift card but add a note telling him to pick out three or four knives that are in the price range of the gift card. Once he has done that, have him talk to you about each knife and then you make the final choice based upon his preferences. That way you really do pick his X-mas knife but are assured it is something he will enjoy.

If you can talk him into keeping one out of his throwing rotation then something from one of the knife makers on the exchange here might be an extra special gift that he can't get just anywhere. Many come up that are in your price range.

I picked this one as an example because I personally own a Bearpaw of a different pattern and he makes a great blade that works hard. Just not so much designed for throwing... ;)

ETA- Mine took about 2 weeks to get to me from Slovakia, so you'd need to account for that if taking this route.

You might still have enough left over for a set of 3 cheaper Boker Magnum bo-kri throwing knives, which while cheap get pretty consistent good reviews as pure throwers...
I would not recomend Boker Magnum , i have been many times in Germany and had chance to see and touch some Bokers . Boker Magnum are junk . If you going to get Boker then take Boker plus , yes they are not so budget but cheaper than other popular brands. If you go for fixed, i recommend Boker Plus kormoran , good steel and good overall made knife.

The GC idea for Blade HQ is the best route. And that way if he really wants a certain knife he can get it. Even if he has to pitch in some extra $ he can. Or get him a throwing knife set and a $100 card. Throwing knives are very affordable. Under $50 easily.

sabre cat #31 post is interesting. You give him the gift AND express interest and discussion of his likes and dislikes. He gets what he likes and you learn more about him; great. :D

To me, gift cards are like money; I would rather get a knife I didn't like, picked out by a caring someone than a gift of money to get my own. Just my .02.
I'm new here. I feel the opposite though. I'd rather have a knife I really like and could give a loved one credit for buying than a knife I dont like but feel obliged to carry. Knife people are picky and those who aren't, don't understand. Gift cards are good.

If you live well outside the city ,like I used to, then he probably will appreciate a high quality knife good for use outdoors and inside. And a knife that will last forever. Google the Cold Steel Ultimate Hunter. Very well made, very strong with great blade steel . I just saw one of the few remaining ones left at a place in Idaho for 104.00 . Comparable knives by other companies sell for 150.00 to 200.00.
I bet he ll love it.
Good luck.

Of course gift cards are very practical, but something about opening an actual present you choose still seems better. Unless you make a terrible choice!!☹️

My personal preferences in your price range would come from Spyderco or Cold Steel. He would like most of those.

I agree. Giving giftcards to your important ones defeats the meaning and fun of giving "gifts."

OP - I suggest to spend the money buying ONE quality folding knife instead of buying multiple lesser ones. Spyderco PM2, Manix 2, sprint run / dealer exclusive Delica or Endura, or Benchmade mini or full-size griptilian would be a nice gift for your bf.

Does he have friends that might understand his likes in knives. They might be able to steer you in the right direction or give us enough data that we can help. I agree that giving someone a nice knife they want is better than a gift card. It is just so hard to do that without data. Personal likes and dislikes vary so much. This really needs to be narrowed down a bit. We don't even have it narrowed to fixed or folder. So without further guidance I would still go gift card. He could be very picky about what he wants or just glad to get another knife. I am sure he will appreciate whatever you got him, but there is the opportunity to make him thrilled with the right choice.
